Good morning.
I am waiting for sunrise. We will see if the clouds obscure it or make the sky more colorful. In the meantime, there's a chill in the air, and it feels like fall. For once, the calendar and weather are in agreement. Now onto this and that.
The repairman came and looked at our stove and, of course, he had to order a part. If all goes well, it should be fixed in about a week. It was interesting watching him work. He used his phone and was on the line with someone from GE, exchanging pictures and information.
Yesterday, I went to book club, where we discussed Theo of Golden that I reviewed last week. Everyone in the club liked the book, with several people giving it a 10/10. We found the biggest difference in opinions came from whether or not you listened to the book or read it. I won't give any more details of the discussion in case someone still wants to read it, but the ending prompted the most differing opinions.
Last time, I mentioned the Coal Miner Memorial, dedicated to the miners of the area who lost their lives in the mines. We visited this after our rail bike ride in Frostburg, Maryland. Coal mining was a dangerous, very difficult job, and it was sad to read all the names and ages of the people killed and the families they left behind. Many were children, as you were allowed to go to work with a family member at age 12. The visit was both an informative and sobering experience.
 |
| The Miner Memorial Park was located next to the rail trail that you see along the fence. |
Well, the dawn has broken without much fanfare, with the sky lightening to a dull grey. So instead of a colorful sunrise, I will leave you with a few colorful pictures from around the yard.
 |
| A praying mantis on some basil, which, by the way, I used to make pesto last week (the basil, not the praying mantis 😀). |
 |
| A volunteer Peruvian zinnia. This is only one plant. The blooms are small, but abundant. |
 |
| This marigold is also a volunteer. |
 |
| This rose bush is blooming despite the feast that bugs are making of its leaves. |
 |
| A rose bush in another part of the yard is faring better with the bugs. |
 |
| I finally found the spot where the lantana is happy. It has done well here this year and last year. |
 |
| The beauty berries have formed. These will be good food for the birds this winter. |
 |
| The butterfly bush blooms match the color of the berries. |
 |
| The anemones always provide good fall color. However, they are invasive, and after fighting with them for years, I will probably pull them out. |
 |
| And speaking of fall bloomers, the mums are just starting. |
 |
| In another part of the yard, a grasshopper is hiding among mums that are still buds. |
I guess it's time to get on with my day and go feed my sister's cat while she's out of town.Until next time...
Your mums will be beautiful in a few weeks. That Peruvian Zinnia is amazing. And of course roses are always beautiful. Thanks for the colors to enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI got the Peruvian zinnia seeds in a seed exchange. I understand now why they had extras. :)
DeleteI always enjoy the photos from your garden. They are always so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWe've had cooler temperatures and a lot of rain recently. That has give a renewed life to several of the flowers, and I can't resist taking pictures of them. Happy that you like them, too.
DeleteI hope the part arrives soon and your stove gets fixed in the next few days.
ReplyDeleteYour garden is looking lovely with all those flowers! Your plants are thriving!
Bugs are causing some problems in the garden, but you are right. Overall things are thriving right now. I'm trying to enjoy them before the cold sets in.
DeleteYour flowers are so beautiful and seeing a praying mantis is unusual around here. That is very sad about the railroad workers and how tragic it was for many families. Our weather has cooled off to the 50's and 60's but I heard the 80's are returning.
ReplyDeleteI don't see many praying mantises around here, either, especially not that color. That's why I took a picture of it. Our weather sounds similar to yours. Later in the week, we're supposed to get into the 80s also. Unfortunately, with rain.
DeleteSo many memorials to minera who died on the job. I have been to several here in WV, and we went to one in Wales too.
ReplyDeleteYour flowers still look great. My roses have been so disappointing this year. Few blooms, and many of them quite small.
Coal mining is such a difficult job for many reasons. My uncle died of black lung disease.
DeleteThis is the second year for the roses and they are coming into their own.
I hope that your stove is back in working order. I have had my own issues with mine, and it’s only a couple years old. I miss the way appliances used to be, namely, long lasting, easy to operate, and had knobs instead of touchpads. When I had issues with my washer, the repairman told me it needed a software update. Good grief!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting, Pattie. I long for the days when we had knobs. My dry fingers don’t always work on touch screens.😖

Coal mining was rough and there are other jobs I'm thankful never to have needed doing, like roofing. Ugh... Best wishes on the stove repair. And the photos are lovely. I could not remember the name of lantana, so thanks for that. My husband teases that identifying flowers is my super power; we don't want that to slip. ;) Blessings, my dear.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many jobs that I am thankful that people do and you have named two important ones. Lineman is another.
DeleteI know many flower names, but seem to forget many, also. But compared to my husband, he probably thinks it's my super power, too. :)
Your garden looks so happy and healthy, beautiful colors. I was getting curious about praying mantis pesto...

Some things are starting to fade in the yard, but we haven't had a freeze yet, so mostly things are happy.
DeleteMy grandfather started off working in the mines, a hard life.. he gave up in his 50s and spent his time in the allotment and we ate a lot of cabbage!!
ReplyDeleteI've read that Wales is a big coal mining place, too. I think it was smart for you father to get out while he could.
