Food Waste Friday, 8-5-11

It's time for Food Waste Friday, when the Frugalgirl encourages us to post pictures from the previous week of wasted food from our household. This accountability hopefully will help us to be more careful with our food and maybe save some money.

Here it goes for this week.

Lessons learned this week: 1. Read the labels and don't assume.
                                              2. If it stinks, you're probably too late.

We always buy dried garlic in our house. At least that's what I thought when I put some bulbs into a closed container so they would fit better in the cabinet. However, a bad smell proved me wrong. Apparently, sometimes, we get fresh garlic. And do you know what fresh garlic does in a closed container? It rots, and rotting garlic really stinks. When my eyes stopped watering, I was very disappointed with the whole episode. Next time, I need to pay closer attention to what I'm putting away.

Fresh garlic can go bad quickly in a closed container.

Fortunately, one bad potato doesn't spoil the whole bunch.

Also, we had one rotten potato. I mentioned last week that I thought we might have a problem in this area, and we did. Fortunately it was only one and the rest were okay. However, we made a big pot of potato soup to avoid another stinky surprise.
