Looking back at my blog during the A-Z Challenge has inspired me to post more things from the past, so here goes my Throwback Thursday plan. Every Thursday, I plan to post something from the past that occurred the same week.
Today's post is a look back to 2011, when we got our first bird feeder. We have had many feeders over the years and many visitors. We have very much enjoyed watching them all. About a year ago, we added the Merlin App to our bird "watching," and that is bringing a new fun aspect to it all.
Presently, we have fewer birds at our feeder than we would like, but there are plenty of birds around enjoying what nature has to offer.
So without further ado, here is the blast from the past. 😀

Our Fine Feathered Friends
However, did I mention the whole family is severely lacking in our understanding of birds? Until the new feeder, I was the advanced one because I could identify both a cardinal and a robin. Ward could spot a blue jay, and Wally and Theodore knew a crow when they saw one. That was about the sum total of it. One time, my sister, a longtime birder, took me birdwatching. While she was saying, "Look at the white on the tip of the bird's wing," I was saying, “Which tree?”

That's a picture from your previous yard, right? What a gorgeous space. I do not have a green thumb, but I appreciate those who do.
ReplyDeleteBirds are tricky to identify. There are several that I am comfortable with recognizing, but the little ones like nuthatches and wrens don't stick in my brain, regardless of how often my husband tells me what they are (he's good at identifying lots of kinds of birds). I got the Merlin app a year ago and have a love-hate relationship with it. It doesn't always pick up on different bird sounds, and I find it to be glitchy. When it does work, though, it's fun to be able to get a positive bird ID.
Yes, that's a picture from our previous house. I am very happy with the move we made, but I do miss the yard from our old house. However, it was 2x bigger and I do not miss the extra work.
DeleteI don't know if I would know when the Merlin app was being glitchy. I do know that sometimes when I first open it, it can take several seconds before it starts hearing birds.
We have all the birds you mentioned, but I have no bird feeders.cI used to have them until the cat next door thought they were simply bait for his amusement.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad about the cat. We always had indoor cats. Sometimes, hawks like to hunt around bird feeders, so the feeders have to come down then, too.
DeleteI was admiring your emerald green lawn. I have recently put up a hummingbird feeder as one has been appearing in the back patio area daily. It has been enjoying the sugar water I put out for it.
ReplyDeleteThe grass in the spring is such a beautiful green. I put a hummingbird feeder up when I heard that they were starting to return, but didn't see any visiting. It's in the kitchen right now waiting to be filled.
