Kitchen details

Recently I showed you an overview of our newly remodeled kitchen. Today, I'm going to add a few more details. Because it's all in the details, right?

In the two corner cabinets on the stove wall, we have shelves that pull all the way out. No more on our knees, peering into the abyss looking for something.

We have pullout shelves on either side of the stove, next to the above cabinets. We are not sure how we want to use them yet, but we have oils, vinegars, and sauces on this side. On the other side, we have grilling utensils because they are too big to store with the other turners, etc.

Next to the sink, we have a pullout drawer for trash and recycling. This is something I requested, and so far, it's working great.

Under the coffee spot, we have this divided drawer. When I first saw it, I thought the spaces were too small to store many items. However, it's working much better than I thought, and it's nice to not have to sort through a disorganized drawer to find what you want as we did in the past. We have a crock next to the stove with things we frequently use for cooking.

We now have stools to use at the peninsula. We shopped a lot of places for stools to no avail for various reasons. However, we found these at an unfinished furniture store and finished them like the table. BTW, they swivel, which can be fun at times. :)

Not in the kitchen, but in our newly configured hallway is the table Ward built for that spot. It is made from ash. All of the wood for the table came from the same tree.

Until next time...

  1. I LOVE your kitchen so much! Those pullouts seem so nice. It has to be so much better than crawling around blindly groping into the back of a cabinet.

    1. We have more drawers than before not to mention the pullouts. It definitely helps when retrieving things. Especially since these drawers extend all of the way. The previous drawers didn't, and we would lose things in the back of them.

  2. I am so envious of the corner cabinet shelves. I still have the black hole!
I am crazy about all your details and Ward's build is beautiful.

    1. Ward's table is very nice. All of the cross pieces were especially time consuming with both constructing and finishing, but he did a good job. It's so nice to have some kind of drop spot there now. If someone comes to visit, then they have a place to put their things while we say hello or hang up their coat.

  3. Oh, the pull-out corner shelves! That is definitely envy-enducing. Mine is on a circular spinny shelf thing, so it's fairly accessible, but not as much as yours is. I also really like the idea of a pull out trash and recycling drawer, although we woudn't have had room for them. Instead, we use our back entry to store those items. Are you getting more used to using your kitchen yet?

    Beautiful woodwork by Ward, btw.

    1. We had a turntable in our old cabinets which was an improvement from our previous house but not as functional as these corner pullouts. Before we had trash under the sink and two recycling bins in the corner of the kitchen. I really liked that they can be tucked away now. We moved the paper recycling bin into the office since recycle a fair amount of paper in their. We have to watch our kitchen trash over, but it's not that big of a deal.

I getting more used to the kitchen every day, although yesterday I couldn't for the life of me remember where I put the toothpicks. It's still a mystery. Good thing we don't need them every day. :)

    1. They'll show up eventually. I wanted one to test the doneness of a cake, but used a knife instead which worked just fine.

  5. I love the pull outs in cabinets. I want them badly. Most of my cabinets are useless because, like you say, you have to get on your knees and peer into the abyss. That is such an apt description of the problem.

    1. When designing the kitchen, as much as we could, we tried to put things in place for when our bodies don't work as well. As I've mentioned before, this is our age-in-place house. We watched our parents get into difficulties as they got older in their multiple story houses, so we are trying to be proactive. That's one reason we moved to a one story.

    1. The table is our first piece of live edge furniture. The top shows a lot of character with different grains and holes (which are filled with epoxy.) and is very pretty. Plus, it has a glass smooth finish. Ward see the flaws , but I think he did a great job.
