To There and Back Again

Ward and I just spent a long weekend in West Virginia for a family reunion with my family.

Let's get the COVID concerns out of the way that you all are wondering about. It was a small vaccinated crowd, outdoors with plenty of room to socially distance. And even though we were all glad to see each other, there was little to no hugging. I felt as safe there as I do anywhere else. Now onto the trip.

On the way there, we left the beaten path to visit this Amish planing mill. Ward enjoyed seeing their processes and talking with the workers. I did not enjoy how hot it was.

The next day we were up early to set up at the Ft. Boreman Historical Park where the event was held.

The park overlooks the confluence of the Little Kanawha and Ohio Rivers. Originally the site was a Civil War fort to protect railroad facilities.

The following day, we visited the WV Botanical Gardens before heading home. The gardens were at the site of an old reservoir and had different garden rooms carved out of the forest.

One of the many gardens was a fairy garden. You can see some of the fairy houses that have been built in the background.

There was a butterfly garden.

Close to the butterfly garden was a gazebo
where Ward was doing his thing of seeing how it was constructed.

There was a pond with marshy ground around it.

And a boardwalk through a swamp.

To summarize our trip:

It was HOT! Thank goodness for fans.

We saw lots of beautiful scenery both in the mountains and along the river.

I am very lucky to have the family I do both immediate and extended.

Until next time...

  1. I did not go to our family reunion this past weekend. There are several unvaxed relatives who believe this covid mess is a big hoax. I would love to have seen them in spite of their beliefs and hope no one gets sick, but TheHub and I agreed we just were not up to taking that kind of chance.
Sounds like your relatives are much wiser than mine!

    1. There was one person who had been exposed to COVID at work, but was unable to get a test in time for the event, so he and his family stayed home. We missed seeing them, but appreciated their thoughtfulness.

  2. That looks like a good site for a reunion. Love the fairy garden!

Sorry you had to endure the heat. In my area, the humidity was miserable. The weather finally moderated yesterday, much to everyone's relief.

I got a kick out of your picture of Ward staring at the gazebo's construction. Even though I've never met him, I knew exactly what he was doing when I saw the photo.

    1. The reunion site was great in every way. Nice shelter, great views of the river, lots of history signs if you were into that kind of thing.

The humidity was right up there with the heat. We took extension cords and a fan that kept a breeze going. My sister had reunion hand fans made up that got a lot of use, also. Despite the heat, everyone had a good time.

  3. I'm glad you were able to have your family reunion outdoors, even if everyone was vaccinated. Sorry you had to endure the heat and humidity, though. According to the news, where you were was almost hotter than the temperatures we had!

    1. We have had it at another place indoors before that worked really well, but we didn't want to go that route this year. We wanted to be safe and wanted everyone to feel safe to come. Luckily, the area where we had it has a low transmission rate at this point although it is rising like everywhere else.
