Last week we had a storm come through that took down a large tree in our front yard. The tree was a Bradford Pear and is know to have splitting problems because of the way the branches grow out of the trunk. But this one had beaten the odds. It was over 50' tall and the trunk had a circumference of 27". The good news is that it didn't hit anything and we were able to get it cleaned up before it killed the grass.
But I miss it. It was the one we saw out our kitchen window that provided a beautiful display of white blossoms in the spring and red and yellow leaves in the fall. It was the one we watched squirrels scamper up and down, and the one we watched birds hop from branch to branch. It was the one that a large flock of cedar wax-wings would land on in the spring to feast on the small fruit, and it was the one that provided interest and structure to our yard.
In the grand scheme of things, this was a minor inconvenience. But I miss it.
Sorry about your tree, it sure was a pretty one. Will you plant a new tree there?
ReplyDeleteNot sure what we're going to do yet. Another tree or beef up the landscaping around the house. It's a little sparse, but when the tree was there, it was okay. Now everything looks plain and boring. For now, it's going to take us a while to remove the debris from the stump grinding before we do anything.
DeleteOur neighbors across the street from us lost their huge maple tree a few years ago. It wasn't on my property but I miss it, especially in the fall. It was so pretty with its autumn colors.
ReplyDeleteMaple trees produce especially pretty fall colors. If we decide to plant another tree, that's one of the kinds we're discussing.
DeleteOh darn.
ReplyDeleteDitto.
DeleteI think Bradford pears are such beautiful trees but they can be a little ornery!
ReplyDeleteThe tree guy told us that they don't sell Bradford pears any more because they cause so many problems. Don't know if that's true or not.
DeleteOur neighbor said she had Cleveland pears which are supposed to be an improvement over Bradfords, but they lost them the same way.
Oh, I'm so sorry the tree came down, but, so glad it didn't damage anything or hurt anyone! I'm also very glad that your "so long" is to the tree and not to your blog! :D
ReplyDeleteNot to worry. No matter how many times I think it's time to stop my blog, I just can't seem to do it. :)
