Food Waste Friday and True Food Confessions--Dec. 7, 2012

It's time for Food Waste Friday, when the Frugalgirl encourages us to post pictures from the previous week of wasted food from our household. This accountability hopefully will help us to be more careful with our food and maybe save some money. Also, I am using this public forum to encourage us to eat out less which includes better meal planning. You can follow how we are doing in this endeavor by reading True Food Confessions.

This Week's True Food Confessions

I was determined that this week would be better than the last couple and it was. We had a lovely dinner out one night and ate at home the rest of the time. We made enough each meal to last through lunch and sometimes into dinner the next day.

Here's what we had.  Thai chicken, fresh broccoli, wild rice, lentil soup, shepherd's pie, homemade bread, and chili. Most nights we had a salad to go with these.

You'd think with this success, I'd be inspired for next week. Wrong. My mind is other places and tired of cooking. However, this is an important priority, so I'm going to give it the old college try.

  2. Good job! Your meals look much more planned and organized than some of mine this past week. Good luck with this next week.

    1. With Christmas approaching and more and more to do, it's going to be a struggle to not let the meal planning to go by the wayside.

  3. Nice job on no food waste this week! Maybe, you can simplify things like baking extra chicken and use leftovers to cut up in pieces and to a salad for a full meal? Soups are always great for us too as they last longer. Just a couple of ideas :)

  4. Good ideas, Lena. This week, I was using up things from the freezer and I didn't have extra chicken or lentils. Next time, I'll have to remember to make extra when I have more. I love salads with additions in them like chicken, but it doesn't seem like enough to the men in the family. I have some big eaters here.

  5. Great job on the no waste. We threw away about 3 tbsp of beans. I can't figure out why hubby didn't eat them when he ate the rest of the beans...oh well...lol.

What's in your lentil soup? It looks yummy!

I love to cook with "planned overs" like Lena mentioned. It is a great way to save time.

    1. The lentil soup had added carrots, celery, and sausage--whatever I could find in the refrigerator and in spice cabinet. It did turn out pretty tasty.
