I think we all learn something every day. That's just part of living. Sometimes it's big, and sometimes it's small. From time to time, I think that I should do a regular feature here about things I've learned, you know, because I have Live and Learn in the name of my blog. However, my follow-through is not always the best.😏 But today, I'm going to make it happen. Here it goes. Some things I've learned recently.

It took way too long to put this sticky straw around the tomato plants.

Costco chicken
2. Costco's Kirkland Signature brand is 30 years old, and the worldwide celebration for this is happening at a Maryland depot. (Knowing these kinds of things happens when your son works there.) I think the most popular Kirkland product is the $4.99 rotisserie chicken. Costco sells enough of them that they raise their own chickens, and last year, they sold over 157 million. However, I consulted with Theo, and he said that if you didn't count gasoline, the most popular item is probably toilet paper. :)
3. Speaking of Costco, their stores are called warehouses, and their distribution centers are called depots. Theo works in a depot. I confused the two when I first learned this.

It's been over a month, and I'm still waiting on this parsley to sprout.
4. If it's important or takes a lot of prep work, it pays to use newer seeds. I planted 6 packages of old seeds, and only two (seeds, not packets) of them sprouted. There were some flowers, some veggies, some in pots, some in the ground. All of these were a hopeful experiment, and luckily, the lack of results is not of much consequence. On the things that really mattered to me, like tomatoes, I used newer seeds.

These peas have been good both for pod eating and shelling.
5. Peas come in purple and yellow varieties. Uncle Billy gave me some extra pea seeds he had that have purple and yellow pods. I've only seen green ones before. The peas are doing well (new seeds), and it's fun to see the new varieties.

This is what the peas look like on the inside--more like the peas I know.
Well, nothing earth-shattering in this list. It's funny how I know that I'm processing new information all the time, but nothing much came to mind as I was writing this. Maybe I should keep a list. We'll see how I do with follow-through on that. 😀
Until next time...

Well I learned something new today, thank you!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know there were different types of straw. Interesting.
And I didn't know there were different colors of peas, but I think I am disappointed since they aren't purple inside.
I liked Costco Kirkland brand when we lived in Nova when our kids were little. Best diapers, wipes and laundry detergent! Now the nearest Costco is about 2 hours away, and I don't like Sam's.
I saved marigold and zinnia seeds for the past several years, and my marigolds came up but the zinnias haven't done much. Guess I need to buy new seeds next year.
Hope you have a good week.
The sticky straw is very difficult to work with. Each little handful is a struggle. We will definitely be reading labels from here on out.
DeleteThere aren't any Costco's in WV, are there? Now that we live closer to one, we go probably too much. :)
I save zinnia seeds, but they never seem to come up again. I'm not sure what's going on, but I thought they were easy to grow.
Every time you mention WV, I get an urge to return for a visit. :) Did I tell you that my husband got me a Biscuit World t-shirt for my birthday? I was disappointed when we were there last summer and the shirts were out of stock, and he remembered that and got me one.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know any of the things you mentioned, so you taught me new things, too. We have green beans that are purple until you cook them, and then they turn green. I think they are an heirloom variety. It's fun to see the color change, but I'm with Kathy, and would have loved peas that were purple on the inside.
Now you need to lean into the "toss and turn" aspect of a blog post.
Tudor's Biscuit World came to my hometown after I left. However, we ate there every time we visited my parents. Unfortunately, we never seemed to be there on a Monday when chicken and dumplings, a favorite of mine, were the special. I'm gonna have to make sure that I plan a trip that includes a Monday.
DeleteBeans seem to come in all sorts of colors and patterns both inside and out. Maybe peas do, too, but these variations are new to me.
I never knes any of this. Thanks for educating me!
ReplyDeleteSuch important things you know now. :)
DeleteI've heard about not using old seeds. Even if they are exposed to excessive heat it diminishes their fertility. And yet I have a box of old seeds in the hot garage.
ReplyDeleteI just found another box of old seeds in Ward's workshop and yet, I didn't throw them away, either. :)
DeleteThat is a lot of chickens! Well, and toilet paper too I guess.
ReplyDeleteToilet paper is the joke about what people buy at Costco. As it turns out, I get my toilet paper there and I only have to buy it once a year. :)
DeleteI had no ideas about peas coming in different packages or different outside shelling. I guess people don't think about such things like you are so used to certain things being a certain way and then you're surprised they are not what you expected.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day.
As the peas continue to grow, a few of the purple ones are starting to turn green. The yellow pods aren't changing.
