Catch Up with This and That

The irises are in bloom now.

Well, I did it! I made it to the end of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge without hating the whole thing. I have done the A-Z challenge seven times over the last eleven years and have found it a struggle to post six days a week, as required. Actually, nothing is required. It's not like I won't eat or something if I miss a day, but I am stubborn and like to finish what I start.

The next obvious question is: why do I keep doing the challenge if it stresses me out so much?  Because with the desperation of coming up with six posts a week comes some of my more creative postings. Much of the time, I don't feel like I have anything to talk about, and the A-Z forces me to think outside the box of my routine life.

This year, I revisited posts from the past. That made the task much easier, and it also made things interesting for me as I read through past posts. Thanks to all of you who read along with me.

Now, it's back to the everyday, and I'm drawing blanks again. Also, it seems that I didn't take many pictures in April to jog my memory, but here are a few.

Last weekend, we went to West Virginia for a memorial service for my cousin. We also visited three different cemeteries where my parents and grandparents are buried. In one of the cemeteries, we were trying to locate the unmarked grave of my found-grandfather. (It's a long DNA story.)
Also, at this cemetery was this Lewis family marker. They were early settlers of the Northwest Territory, and it was interesting to see something tangible that I had only read about in history books.

Ward continues to work on puzzles. This one, called Literary Dogs and was quite interesting with its whimsy pieces. (Enlarge the picture if you want to see the details.) As it turns out, the puzzle was based on a 40-foot mural in a library that was only about an hour from us.

So we had to go visit it. It was hard to get a picture because it was so long, but it was a really fun mural.

And speaking of Ward, he had a birthday yesterday.
Note: He is not quite 100 years old yet. 😀

This bluebird has been flying into our living room window many times a day. He then goes to the gutter to keep watch. Apparently, he is trying to defend his territory from his reflection. Some sources this could go on for weeks.

We recently visited the Brighton Dam Azalea Garden. We try to go each spring when the 22,000 azaleas are in bloom. However, we kept up our trend of being about a week late for peak blooms, but it was still pretty. It is a popular place for photo shoots, and we saw several. If you look closely, you can see one here.

And true to form, Ward was just as interested in the structure of the dam as he was in the flowers.

That's all I've got for now.

Until next time...

  1. You have irises already? Wow. Our lilacs should be in full bloom by the end of the week. They are about 3 weeks ahead of usual.

Our art museum had an exhibit on antique puzzles with whimsy pieces several years ago. I hadn't heard of that before, and my daughter and I had a lot of fun looking for the different shapes. Ward's puzzle looks like a neat one. A very happy birthday to him!

    1. Our lilacs are done and the irises are in their prime. And I just saw the first rhododendron blooms.
For Christmas, Ward got a subscription for a puzzle club where you choose puzzles that come to you in the mail and you mail them back when you're done. They are all wooden pieces cut in crazy shapes including the whimseys. He is enjoying the service and renewed it on his own.

  2. That purple iris is beautiful! Happy belated birthday to Ward; his birthday pie looks delicious. Love that puzzle, too, with all the dogs (and some cats, too, I see). Looks like you've been busy visiting places. :)

    1. The pie was delicious. It used sour cherries from our tree (last year's). We topped it with vanilla ice cream and to take it to a new level. :)

  3. Happy Birthday wishes to Ward! Yum on the cherry pie!
The iris and azaleas are lovely. What a neat puzzle and mural.
Sorry for the loss of your cousin. Anymore it seems like my family only has reunions for funerals which is sad.
Hope you have a great week and a very happy Mother's day.

    1. It's a toss up whether it's cherry or apple pie that is my favorite. Ward didn't care which I made, so I went to the freezer to see what we had.
I get together with my paternal cousins once a year, but the numbers keep dwindling. The cousin who just died was one of the main organizers and attendees and I'm afraid that the gatherings won't continue much longer. But we'll keep trying.

  4. Like you, the challenge makes me come up with more creative posts or perhaps it pushes me think more than usual. I get a bit lazy with my blogging sometimes.

I like that dog mural - adorable. They should do with cats.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. I get lazy too with blogging. Even the simple posts take more time than I think they should, so I don't post unless I'm in the right mood with some extra time. Sometimes, I think I'm going to do a self-imposed month of blogging like the A-Z, but I've never followed through.
There are a few cats in the picture, but dogs are the primary animal. All of the dogs in the mural come from books.

  5. Happiest wishes for Ward's next trip around the sun...much less than 100th! Beautiful flowers all.

  6. I love irises. Ours are already bloomed and gone, but they are "fancy" flowers and I love their scent.
Happy Birthday to Ward. I just assumed the 100 meant he was 100%. I could use his help with my puzzle of Europe.
Did you see prom photos being taken or wedding ones? I saw the couple but could not tell.

    1. Yes, let's say he's 100% of all good things. :)
There was a variety of ages and styles doing photo shoots. I'm not sure what the yellow dress was for, but last week was prom for many of the schools around here. When we were in Ohio recently, we ate at the same restaurant as many of the prom goers. Now, that was some fashion show!

  7. Happy late birthday to Ward! I like that you do A-Z to push your writing. I did it a couple times and I loved it, but it was a lot. Especially with 5 little kids in the house. I'm down to two but the time commitment is more than I could manage. Maybe one day I'll join y'all again. ;)

    1. It sounds like you're busy enough with the writing you already do. A-Z can wait. A very long time. :)

  8. Your WV trip sounds like a good one, wven though the reason was sad.
For the bluebird: try cutting out paper snowflakes and putting them on your window...or something similar. This worked for us when cardinals kept flying into our big windows.

  9. 100 is a good age. I'm 101 myself. The reservoir azalea walk would be beautiful at peak I imagine.
