I'm taking a break from the A-Z challenge today to wish you Happy Easter and to finish our vacation summary.

Travel, Visiting, and a Blast from the Past
On day ten, we traveled from Austin back to Dallas. But first, we had lunch with my former supervisor, who had recently relocated to Austin from Maryland. It was kind of crazy that I hadn't seen her since a year ago, when I retired, but met up with her in Texas. It was fun catching up without the constraints of a manager/employee relationship.
Then it was on the road again. Austin was another big city with impressive traffic and lots of confusing interchanges, but we made it back to the open road. As we got closer to Dallas, we decided to stop at Buc-ee's. Buc-ee's is essentially a truck stop on steroids, and we were told that it was a must-see. They began in Texas after we left and have spread across several southern states, but none have made it as far north as we live. One of Buc-ee's claims to fame is its very clean restrooms. They did not disappoint in this area.

There was a lot of Buc-ee merchandise of all kinds (and lots of other pretty nice stuff). Buc-ee was available for pictures.

But I quickly found what I was looking for-the fudge counter. We got a pound of assorted varieties to take to our friends in Dallas.
We stayed with friends in Dallas the next two nights and had a good time telling stories and eating delicious homemade food. However, we did go see a couple more things. First up was South Fork Ranch, from the TV series Dallas fame. If you're not familiar, Dallas was the longest-running nighttime soap opera from 1978 to 1991. It gained international fame with the cliffhanger of "Who shot JR?"

Me and my friend, that dastardly JR Ewing.

We toured the ranch house. Some of the show was filmed here, and some on a sound stage in Hollywood.

Ward got to try out Bobby's Mercedes 450 SL.
The plan for the afternoon was to do some hiking in a nearby park. However, it was very windy, so instead we went browsing at one of Ward's favorite stores, Woodcraft. There are none close to us, so he doesn't get the chance to go there as often as he would like.

I looked around for a while, then went to the car to read and let Ward browse to his heart's content.
The next afternoon, we headed to the airport for our flight home. Despite extra delays in many airports because of TSA staffing, we had no problems. In addition, our flights were on time and routine. Just the way we like them, and experience has taught us to be thankful for that when it happens.

It's enticing to buy sweets by the pound. I've tried that once and it's not a good idea to eat them all by yourself.
ReplyDeleteI'm you had a good trip. I find I prefer to travel through other people's blog so thanks for sharing it.
Have a lovely day.
I don't have the best will power when sweets are involved, so I would have never gotten a whole pound of fudge if we were not getting it for a group of people. Even then, fudge is so rich, a little goes a long way.
DeleteI'm glad you got to see somethings here being an armchair traveler.
Sounds like an excellent vacation. Though I find it a little overwhelming, my husband is a Bucees fan.
ReplyDeleteThe vacation was good. We enjoyed ourselves and didn't think too much about all the chores, etc., we left at home.
DeleteI would stop at Buc-ees again for the bathrooms, but I wouldn't make them a destination as some people do.
Happy Easter! Welcome home! Thanks for taking us along on your travels.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to see South Fork from Dallas. Was the house as impressive as I remember from the TV show?
I'm not a Buc-ees fan. We stopped at the one in Pigeon Forge on a December
Sunday afternoon, and it was insane. Those beaver nuggets aren't worth it to me. :)
Woodcraft is one of my husband's favorite stores too. I look around and go back to the car too. Hope you are able to get rested up from your trip.
The ranch and house were built for another family and the producers wanted to use it for filming. At first, they said no, but eventually said yes because it was lucrative. The house was not as big as it seemed on TV, and they did special effects with mirrors to make the swimming pool seem bigger.
DeleteBuc-ees was overwhelming. Despite the fact that it was huge, it was full of people. But I'm glad I got to see what it was all about.
I've never been to Buc-ees. Doesn't sound very enticing to me, but I dislike most busy, crowded spaces. I'm assuming Woodcraft is a woodworking store?
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking us along on your adventures. I like the shirt you wore in the second picture. ;)
Yes, Woodcraft is a woodworking store. They sell lumber and tools of all kinds. That T-shirt got quite the workout on this trip. Thanks for the suggestion.
DeleteWho did shoot JR? I can't remember. I never really watched that show.
ReplyDeleteHis sister-in-law, Kristen, who he was having an affair with, shot JR. She claimed she was pregnant, so he didn't press charges. Meanwhile, he had his wife admitted to a sanatorium, so he could take custody of their son. His wife, had a drinking problem. Did I mention Dallas was a nighttime soap opera?
DeleteIt sounds like a really nice trip, especially the added perk of seeing friends.
ReplyDeleteI didnt care for Buc-ee's either, but I am not a fan of any big store. I just find them overwhelming.
We had hoped to see more friends, but I think this was just the right mix. I'm somewhat of an introvert, so I don't think I could have visited with someone every day.
DeleteSounds like you had a really nice vacation and I'm glad you got to spend some time with friends, as well. Glad you didn't experience any delays at the airport.
ReplyDeleteIt was a really nice vacation. The only drawbacks were the heat and traffic at times. However, those didn't stop us from doing anything.
Delete"Now, Sue Ellen..."
ReplyDelete(Great trip June and Ward!)
They had a theater at South Fork that was playing old Dallas episodes. Sue Ellen was a mess!
