I think it's time for some speed blogging. The timer today is set at 14 minutes.
We won't be putting up any Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving.
Anne at Cooking and All That Jazz has been doing a countdown 'til Christmas for weeks (months?) now. Reading her posts about what she has done toward the holidays makes me anxious every time I read them. But it isn't even Thanksgiving yet, I tell myself. However, I have several gifts ordered and am working on ideas for others. We don't have elaborate decorations, so I don't need to start too far ahead of time. The weekend after Thanksgiving, the fall wreath will come down, and the holiday one will go up. The outdoor lights go up then, too, if the weather cooperates. A weekend or two after that, the tree will go up.
Recently, we had a tree taken down, but before that happened, we had to remove the rock pile we had around it. We have very rocky soil, so when we dig up rocks in our various flower beds, we add them to the pile. We have accumulated quite a few since we started doing this. As we were moving the rocks, I felt like I was working on a prison chain gang. But I like rocks, and I like my pile. Just because.
As we moved the rocks, we sorted them into small, medium, and large sizes. This helps when we go to the pile for a rock for a particular use.
And speaking of maintenance projects, we figured out this week that we have a leak around the bow window in our living room. The window is only a few years old and didn't appear to be compromised, so we surmised the likely culprit was cracked caulking in several places around the outside of the window. After some major bush trimming to be able to get ladders in place, Ward did the tedious job of recaulking. While he did that, I cleared the debris that had been cut. I hope this fixes things because leaks are so hard to figure out sometimes. At least we know it hasn't been going on for long, so there shouldn't be much damage to the wood around the window. Fingers crossed.
Installing the bow window a few years ago. Ward recaulked the outside of it.
While I enjoy the company of others, I am an introvert, and new social situations are not easy for me. However, when I was asked to join a bowling league, I said, "Sure." Not because I was dying to go bowling, but because I thought it would be good for me to get out of my comfort zone. I have only bowled occasionally throughout my life, with years and years between games. I'm usually happy if fewer than half of my balls end up in the gutter. But this is a fun league, not competitive, so it was a good fit in that way.
I've gone duck pun bowling a couple of times. It's a fun social activity. I like it because it's hard to take it seriously. I hope you have fun with your league, and good for you for stepping out of your comfort zone.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the window leak. Boo.
Don't get too sucked into what others are doing for Christmas. It's supposed to be an enjoyable time. And yes, I have to remind myself of that!
I am also wondering about the commitment of every Wednesday for the next 6 months with the league. Wednesday is the only day that we don't have a regular activity planned outside the house, so I am hesitant to fill it with something regular. But I will keep going because a decision can't be made one one experience. Right now, I am playing as a sub which gets entered into the computer differently.
DeleteI like the idea of speed blogging, you did a great job with it! I hope the caulk takes care of the problem with the leak. It's good that you noticed it before it got any worse. Have fun with the bowling league! By the way, I kind of like your rocks too. :)
ReplyDeleteSomeday, I will get ambitious and make a rock garden. :)
DeleteI have gone duck pin bowling, in fact, I used to be on a bowling league decades ago. My highest score was 222!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post, thank you so much for sharing.
I am very impressed with your score. My high game last week was 63. My main goal was knock down at least one pin every frame. Didn’t always happen, but that was okay.
DeleteI think I need to try speed blogging, myself! Maybe closer to the holidays!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you should get stressed about Christmas preparations. I think it's important to give each occasion proper attention. Celebrate Thanksgiving first, then, focus on Christmas and the New Year.
Oh, I hope you will make a rock garden with your rocks!
I also hope that the recaulking will take care of the leak around your window. Good thing you noticed the leak early.
Well done stepping out of your comfort zone to go bowling. Good of you to give it a couple of tries before deciding if it is for you or not. :)
I agree, that each occasion should have it's proper attention. I think advertisers try to push them earlier and earlier for more sales and as a society, we have gotten caught up in that. And sometimes that would be me, I guess. But compared to some, I am very restrained. :) I am seeing more outside Christmas decorations already up than I have ever seen before.
DeleteI like your turkey pumpkin! So cute! We wait til after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas, then leave the Christmas decorations up until New Years.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the leak around the window. I hope the caulking fixes it. What a lovely window. We had a bay window at our old house, but I think I like the looks of your bow window better.
Have fun bowling! I admire your willingness to try new things.
My turkey pumpkin was from my sister. So simple, but so fun.
DeleteI usually want to take Christmas decorations down on New Years, but sometimes we leave them up until the Epiphany, a week later, per my husband's request.
I didn't know until we moved here that a bow window has 4 or more windows as opposed to a bay window that has 3. I thought they were all bay windows. :)
I've only bowled a couple times in my life. That version sounds more fun. I hope it went ok.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised at how sore my tricep was after bowling. I have been going to exercise classes and working my triceps, among other things, for months now, but I guess I was using them differently. :)
DeleteI don't intend to stress anyone out. I had a miserable holiday season last year, due to being both sick and unprepared. I vowed this year would be better so the Christmas tracking is only for my own benefit. I only put it out to the world to keep me honest!
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't worry about my personal anxiety. I admire how you've been consistently working toward the holidays.
DeleteI put my exercise schedule on my blog for the same reason-to keep me honest. :)
Love that rock pile! I loke that you keep them, and even sorted them by size. Great idea.
ReplyDeleteI hope you solved the leak problem. You are right about the diffiin tracking them down! We had to replace our whole roof because we could never find the source of the leak, after trying for weeks. As it turned out, there were several places that needed the wood replaced before the new roof could go on.
I enjoyed bowling very much when I took it as a college class one of 2 required phys ed classes. I would have liked to continue but couldn't find a league to join.
I am lucky that I found a league that is not too serious about their scores. If you were still interested, I know the bowling alley in Spencer has leagues, but I think they are more serious.
DeleteJamie (jannghi.blogspot.com):
ReplyDeleteThat pumpkin turkey is a very clever idea!
I think so, too. My sister gave that to me.
DeleteFor speed blogging you covered a lot! I love your turkey pumpkins!
ReplyDeleteThe leaking window sounds like a nightmare, but what a big beautiful window! A few months ago my husband I noticed buckling drywall in a guest room we rarely use. Turns out a tree limb had punctured the roof, and water had been coming in! I've been wanting to do some repainting in our house, but that was one of the rooms where the paint color was just right. It's crazy how water always finds a way in.
I've never heard of duckpin bowling, so that's going on our list of things to look for!
Water definitely finds its way in. If only it would give more clues to where it's coming from. Duckpin bowling is similar to 10-pin bowling, but with a smaller ball and pins. It is popular in the east, but not nearly as common as 10-pin. Duckpin bowling is the only one available in our town.
