I've just come inside from sitting on the porch listening to heavy rain as dusk turned to darkness. This was just what we imagined when we added a roof to our porch. Even though it was only for a short while, I enjoyed how peaceful it was.
But last weekend was a different story. Miss Landers, her friend, and I went to West Virginia for our annual family reunion. It was great to catch up with my cousins and their families; however, when we make a trip to WV, there is always too much to do in too short a time. It's a six-hour drive each way, so we travel the day before the reunion and leave after the reunion to head home.

| Eight of the twenty-three first cousins were at my family gathering. Sadly, three of them have already passed. |
One of the things we did this time was to visit two different cemeteries to clean markers, trim the grass, and decorate with flowers. It was a lovely opportunity to reflect on those who have come before us. But to tell the truth, I was distracted by the heat. The sun was bearing down, and I got a little cranky. I would like to say that I rose above my discomfort with a complete show of reverence, but I wasn't that evolved. But in the end, I honored my relatives. And my mother would have been happy, as that is what she taught us to do.
We also visited a homebound cousin and went to various stores to purchase West Virginia products that we can only find when we visit.
| Mr. Bee potato chips are the only chips made in West Virginia. They are made in Parkersburg, where my family is from. |
Sometimes, we stay two nights to break up the travel, but not this time because Ward was coming home. I left Friday morning, and he came home Friday evening from his vacation in Poland. Needless to say, we were anxious to see each other. I wouldn't say that I spent the time he was away pining after him, but boy, was I happy to see him.
However, there was a little adjusting to do, also. He was totally mixed up from jet lag and long travels, and I had started sleeping in an "L" position in our bed with my legs making a 90-degree angle and filling his space. We're back to normal ways now, and all is good.
Until next time...

I hope you two get rested up and getting back to something like normal. I bet Ward has much to tell you about his trip. And lots of pictures I bet!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a good, if uncomfortable, time with your family. The weather has certainly not been very pleasant, although this rain is very welcome.
Ward may share some of his pictures here when he gets settled back in.
DeleteSounds like you were quite busy during your family reunion, but, how lovely to get together with your cousins. I can't remember the last time I saw a working public phone. We had a bank of them in the lobby of the office where I used to work and one day, they were all removed.
ReplyDeleteBefore this one, the last working pay phone I saw was in the middle of the woods among a group of cabins. There were no phones in the cabins, so this was the phone for them. It was very strange seeing it in that location.
DeleteWhat a great family tradition, and I'm sure it was good to visit with your cousins.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have family reunions when my grandmother was alive, but now funerals are the only time we get together, which is sad. Yum on the donuts, and how cool about the pay phone.
Glad Ward is safely home, and I hope he will share a few stories/pictures from his adventures.
These reunions stem from when we were kids and would gather at my grandparents farm in the summer for a picnic. They were so much fun, running over the hills, playing in the creek, and eating homemade ice cream. One of my cousins now owns the farm and we occasionally meet there for old times sake. However, now we mostly sit around and talk. :)
Delete6 hours driving is quite a lot. My back gets sore if I do three hour drives.
ReplyDeleteOf course, we took breaks, but it was still a long time as far as I am concerned. My back used to get unbearably achy after just an hour or two in the car. But since I have been exercising, I tolerate the car better. Now that we have time, my husband and I talk about doing a cross-country trip. However, I don't think I would be able to be in the car that long.
DeleteI'm reading this to pass the time while we drive. :) I hope Ward is able to share some pictures from his trip when he feels rested.
ReplyDeleteYour trip sounds pleasant. I was especially excited to see the Mr B's potato chips. We discovered them during our recent trip to WV. We haven't yet tried the mothman chips. We did eat a bag of Biscuit World chips. I don't know if I would go out of my way again for that particular flavor, but they made me laugh.
I don't do very well when looking down while riding. That must be one of your super powers. :) Biscuit World Chips! Didn't know those existed. I'll have to look for them next time we're in southern WV. Mr. Bee has 8-10 varieties of chips, including Mothman. When I was a kid, they had one. They changed the recipe a few years ago to make them less greasy and I like them better. But, not everyone agrees.
