Speed Blogging Grumble

Time for another addition of speed blogging, where I just write and see where my mind takes me. Hold on. Here we go. 😀

The older I get, the less willing I am to be uncomfortable. Aging brings with it everyday aches and pains, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about being uncomfortable when there is an easy way to fix it. I don't like being too hot (or too cold, for that matter). For example, I was helping Miss Landers move a woodpile yesterday, and I was hot and sweaty, and annoyed by clouds of gnats. I didn't like it, and all I could think about was getting home to my cool house. And it wasn't that hot out, not like the 90s-100°F we had most of the summer.

And speaking of annoying gnats, that brings me to annoying mosquitoes. We are having more problems with mosquitoes than ever before. They aren't the big mosquitoes that only come out at dusk, like the ones of my youth. They are tiny ones that are out all day. Just about every time I go into the backyard, I get bitten. A little while ago, I was outside for about 10 minutes, and I got four bites.

I am starting to suit up from head to toe to help against the mosquitoes, with long sleeves and pants, but they become hot quickly. One day, I was out with long sleeves, jeans, garden gloves, and a hat. Those pesky little mosquitoes found the slit in one of the knees of my jeans and bit me there. Ward is also getting bitten a lot, although the bites don't bother him as much as they do me.

We have had mosquito dunks out for over a month, and they don't seem to be helping. :(  I guess I could start using insect repellent, but I really don't want to do that. Especially if I just want to go out for a short time. I'd rather just complain.

The timer is beeping, so let me finish with thanks for listening to me grumble.

Until next time...

Note: I have started using Afterbite as soon as I feel the itch from a bite, and if I have gotten a lot of bites, I also add an antihistamine. Those treatments seem to be helping to reduce the itching and swelling.

--After the timer beeped, I went back and added pictures of pollinators, which just go about doing good without bothering me.

  1. I am so sorry that the mosquitos are biting you. I read somewhere that mosquitoes tend to bite some people more than others. My daughter, too, seems to get bitten by mosquitoes more often than I do and she develops big bumps and welts. Citronella candles are supposed to help keep mosquitoes away - you might have to burn one near you every time you are outside.
Lovely photos of the pollinators, though. :)

    1. Citronella candles can't hurt, but studies have shown that they don't make a difference, and personal experience confirms that. I wish that was wrong, because citronella would be an easy, natural fix.
It's also said that fair skinned people (me) get more bites and react more, but apparently that hasn't been proven to be true.

  2. I am right there with you grumbling about mosquitos. We are even having them fly in the house every time the front door opens. They are not as fond of TheHub as they are me and like you I hate spraying unless I am going to be outside for a while.

    1. Thankfully, we haven't had too many in the house. We mostly go in and out the back door to the porch, and we keep the fans going out there. That helps keep them away. Or at least, they're not there in the same numbers as in the yard. Good luck with the mosquitoes at your house.

  3. Love your pollinator pics! Speed blogging seems to work, and it ended up pretty much one topic! (Mine sometimes go all over the place) Sorry about insects that bite. Definitely something that stays on our minds (as we scratch.) Glad you've got some ways to become a bit more comfortable.

  4. I'm with you---clouds of biting bugs annoy me. I don't get bitten much, thankfully but usually wear long sleeves when bugs are out. i put cortisone cream on the bite if I get one. Seems to help fast. I have some antihistamine cream too.

    1. I have gotten bites under my clothing. These mosquitoes are quite small and seem to be able to go where they want. The After Bite helps, but I'll add cortisone cream next time because I also have some of that. Thanks.

  5. My sister had a personal mosquito repellant fan at her campsite this past summer, and it seemed to work well. I googled it, and the closest I can find is from flextail.com. The URL is ridiculously long, but I think you could search the website for it. It's kind of bulky, but I think there is a belt clip on it, and it might suit for going out in your yard. I also wonder if a personal clip on fan would work, since mosquitoes don't like breezes. I totally agree with you, BTW--I dislike biting insects of all kinds. We have planned vacations around when the biting flies tend to peak (which happens a lot by the lakeshores in Michigan).

    Your butterfly picture is stunning!

    1. I'll check out the fan. Thanks for the tip. We plan our vacations around bugs, also. That's why our trip to Maine was in April. :)

  6. I get bitten so quickly I can hardly step out the door! I have started using repellent, which i dislike, but I hate having 3 or 4 bites all the time! I must be delicious.

  7. The same here. I don't know but I think doing things the easy way make your life easier. I guess being older somehow makes you care less about doing hard work.

I get bitten by mosuitos indoor so I guess maybe you're better off than I am.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. I have not gotten bitten indoors, so I am doing better than you. I hope that doesn't happen too often.
