Recently, Ward and I took a trip to Alaska, with stops in Seattle on the way there and back. I am chronicling it here.
After an uneventful flight from Anchorage, we found Caroline waiting for us at the baggage claim in Seattle. On the way back to her house in Poulsbo, I said the first thing I wanted to do was visit the famous Sluy's Bakery, which was recommended by blogger friend, Lili. So that's what we did. There was a line out the door, but the peanut butter and chocolate cookie I had was worth the wait.
The day was hot, and we were tired, so we didn't spend any more time exploring the charming town of Poulsbo. We spent the rest of the day at Caroline's house catching up and watching the fun movie, Enola Holmes. The movie is based on the children's books by Nancy Springer and features Sherlock Holmes' younger sister, Enola.
The next day, we had a leisurely morning before heading out to the Grand Forest for a hike.

We hiked through a lush hemlock forest. |

This was not quite what we expected when we saw a lake on the map. |
After Indian food for dinner, we watched another Enola Holmes movie. These have inspired me to finally read the books. I have the first one on deck.
The next morning, Caroline took us to the airport, which involved a pleasant ferry ride.

Our trip was not delayed like it was when we flew to Seattle from Baltimore. |

From the plane, we had one last look at the spectacular, rugged mountains in the west before we flew home to our beautiful, rounded mountains in the east. (That's Mt. Rainier in the distance.) |
It was a wonderful trip with beautiful scenery, experiences, and friends. We couldn't ask for anything more.
Oh, no! I am so sorry y'all came home to a sauna! Yikes! But your pictures are absolutely beautiful! The hike looks like such a good time! Being in nature is so wonderful! I saw that Alaska had a very big earthquake yesterday. Glad y'all missed that! I am going to investigate these Enola Holmes books now!
ReplyDeleteAs often happens, some of the most beautiful places on earth are also the most prone to the severity of nature. AK is one of those places. I'm so happy that we got a taste of its beauty without any of the dangers.
DeleteI loved the Enola Holmes videos! What a great lighthearted way to extend the Holmes' traditions. Mt. Ranier is experiencing earthquakes itself these days. So sorry about the AC part...and glad you got it fixed. Welcome home to all the undone chores that await you!
ReplyDeleteSmall earthquakes are often a precursor to a volcanic eruption. I hope Mt. Rainier isn't getting ready to blow it's top.
DeleteWe don't get Netflix, so I was unfamiliar with the Enola Holmes movies, but really enjoyed them. I think a 3rd one is in the works.
We are slowly catching up on our chores from being gone, mainly focusing outside. Some things grew like crazy while we were gone and others succumbed to the heat.
I'm sure Lili would steer you right with a bakery recommendation. :) What a great end to a nice trip.
ReplyDeleteI wish we had more time with Caroline. Maybe next time.
DeleteI thought of you when I heard about the earthquake in Alaska. Glad you had left the state before the quake happened.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a lovely time in Washington State, as well.
I hope your air conditioner has been fixed and you are enjoying some cooler indoor temps. :)
It turns out that two different parts were damaged on the AC, one inside and one outside. They have been fixed and are working well. We have fixed the four lights that got fried in Ward's shop and now we found the circuit with the outdoor lights isn't working. But we are cool and comfortable as the temperatures and humidity continue with their summer extremes.
DeleteThat's not much of a lake, on your hike.
ReplyDeleteWe had a hard time finding it because we expected something much bigger and clearer. :)
DeleteThose mountains! I remember them from my two trips to the northwest. Just jawdropping.
ReplyDeleteThe only time I had seen mountains in Washington before this trip was from the airport. Such beauty in those rugged mountains. If you lived there, I wonder if they would fade into the background after a while?
DeleteWelcome home! Sorry about the a/c but I'm glad you were able to get it fixed.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite memories was flying into Seattle and seeing Mount Ranier poking up from the clouds. It was the first time I had seen such a huge mountain.
Mt. Rainier is stunning. That's what I remember from the one other time I flew into the Seattle airport.
