Happy Halloween This and That

Well, because I know everyone wants to know what I've been doing, (😁) I'll tell you. Nothing much. But that's not going to stop me from sharing.

Today was a day off from work because of an eye appointment. Unlike most of these appointments, this one didn't take hours and hours. I was back home in fewer than three hours—a record, maybe, and a welcome surprise.

We've been having unseasonably warm weather, so we expect more trick-or-treaters than some years. However, we usually don't get more than thirty. We bought candy last night. I didn't want to buy it too early because of the temptation. If it was in the house, I would have just one piece, then another, and end up needing to buy more. Sometimes, the best way to have willpower is not to have temptation. :)

On the way to buy the candy, I turned in my early voting ballot at one of the ballot boxes. I don't know what will happen on Tuesday and beyond, but I've had my say. It's going to be interesting.

Last weekend, Ward and I took a morning visit to Washington Monument State Park. The park is named after the stone monument on top of South Mountain. It was the first one completed that was dedicated to George Washington, and it was built in 1827. Another one was built in Baltimore two years later, and the iconic obelisk one located on the National Mall was finished in 1885.

Normally, you can go up into the monument,
but it was closed last weekend because of migrating birds.

The trip was a good way to start the morning. The sun was shining, and the leaves were beautiful. However, we were not the only ones out and about visiting the monument; we ran into a big birthday party, Appalachian Trail hikers, and a very active pack of Cub Scouts. Watching the scouts' random motion did NOT make us yearn for the days when Wally and Theo were those ages. After a short hike, we headed back home.

We drove through Boonsboro on our way home and saw various "creatures" lining the streets. The dozens of figures lent a fun, festive feel to the town. Some were silly, some were scary, and they were made by various local civic groups and businesses.

The doorbell is starting to ring with trick-or-treaters, so I better go.

Until next time...

  1. Haha! Those are some cute little creatures around town! Looks like the state park trip was a good one! That's a neat-looking monument! Glad you had good weather for your trick-or-treaters. It rained here, but that didn't stop these kids! Haha!

    1. I didn't keep an exact count, but I'd say we had about 30. And, of course, we overbought candy, so we'll be snacking on some chocolate today. Yum!

  2. I always enjoy finding out what you've been doing, June, because you and Ward always do some interesting things and visit some interesting places. There were no trick-or-treaters in my neighborhood, today!

    1. I think every place has interesting places to visit. It's very easy for us to get caught up in the chores of every day life, so I try to get us out doing something a little different now and then.

  3. I think we all enjoy hearing what you've been up to. I really like your "street creatures". That's fun!

We had 19 trick or treaters. We seem to get 20-30 kids every year (I'm estimating). I don't buy a lot of candy for similar reasons to you. But every year I feel a little panicky, because the kids tend to arrive in big groups, and I am always afraid we'll run out. We never have so far, though.

I laughed when I read your comment about the cub scouts. Nope, I don't miss those days, either. My husband still volunteers with the scouts, but our troop is small, so there aren't hordes of them.

    1. We have more candy left over than we need as Ward was hoping when we bought it. I'm going to see if I can put some away for the holidays. Ward goes backpacking with former scout dads and they really enjoy not herding boys around on their trips. They were all happy to put years in with the scouts, but are happy to be on the other side now.

  4. It was pouring here so I didn't bother to get any candy to hand out. I also saw no trick or treaters out on the block. But maybe they were because I fell asleep in my chair.

    1. There are more group events now by churches and other organizations for Halloween, so I don't think as many kids go door to door these days.

  5. The leaves are beautiful! Looks like an interesting state park, and I love the creatures.
Last night my husband and I were talking about our son in cub/boy scouts, and he mentioned the scout masters song "we're old, we're tired and we always need to pee." :D

    1. When we have more time, I hope we can go back to the park and hike a part of the Appalachian Trail there. I vaguely remember that song, but I'm sure my husband does. I'll mention it to him.

  6. You got 30 or so more Trick or Treaters than us! That monument sure is interesting. Love old structures like that!

    1. Not sure why, but your comments keep showing up as spam. Anyway, in the 1930's, the CCC patched up the monument to what it is today. My husband especially likes to see how everything is built, including this monument.

  7. I enjoyed this post. BTW, my brother lives near Boonsboro. His wife has a yoga studio somewhere...maybe Frederick?

    1. It's very pretty around Boonsboro, and Frederick is where we go to do most of our shopping.
