Thankful Sunday, July 1, 2018

I haven't checked in for a while, so here are some of the things that have been occupying my time.

We've been picking cherries.

We've been harvesting and freezing cherries from our sour cherry tree and I have the cherry-stained hands to prove it. We were a little late, so we didn't get as many as we had hoped, but there are some in the freezer.  For the prospect of cherry pies ahead, I am thankful.

We hosted a picnic for the people I work with and their families.

We had good food and a relaxed time visiting with friends and their families. As a dark cloud approached, everyone hustled and we got inside with the food before the downpour started. It was great teamwork. For this fun afternoon, I am thankful.

Ward had surgery.

Ward had surgery this week. He was in and out in a day and is recovering well although his activities are limited for a while. Times have changed. When his father had this same surgery years ago, he was in the hospital for a week. For Ward's successful surgery, I am thankful.

Uncle Billy shared cucumbers.

Uncle Billy and Aunt Martha shared cucumbers from their garden with us. I made a cold cucumber soup with them which has been refreshing to have on these days of oppressive heat. For the gift from the garden and the cool house to enjoy them in I am thankful.

  1. I am glad to hear that your husband's surgery was successful; I hope his recovery will go well and be as pain-free as possible.

How lovely to be able to pick cherries from your own tree! I remember going cherry picking with some friends when I was in Wisconsin and making pies with the cherries we picked! Enjoy a slice of cherry pie for me, too, when you make one, please.

I'm glad you were able to move the picnic indoors before it began to rain! I'm sure your colleagues enjoyed the get together. And so nice of your uncle and aunt to share the bounty of their garden with you!

I hope the week ahead is a good one for you. Hope you get a break in the heat wave!

    1. Generally, I'm not a cherry person, but I like the sour ones we have. My sister has blueberry bushes, and a blueberry-cherry pie is really good. I made several of those last year.

We have until next weekend before daytime highs will lower to the 80's. I'm glad it is light for so long, because it's not until late evening before it is cool enough to do much outside. I'm waiting until this evening to do some more grass cutting.

  2. Wow! I can't believe your uncle is harvesting cucumbers already. Mine haven't even bloomed yet. I'm very jealous of your cherry tree too. I remember as a kid some of my neighborhood playmates had a cherry tree in their backyard, and we'd always get in trouble for eating them all before their mother could pick them for her pie. Poor woman...

    1. I think he's a little early with his cucumbers, but others are harvesting them, also.

For the two years we've had it, the cherry tree has been quite prolific. Enough for us and the birds. However, it sounds as if your neighborhood tree didn't produce enough for the birds, kids, and mothers. We would pick more off ours if we could reach them. Even with a ladder most of the cherries are out of reach.

I still miss a lot from my old yard, but I am appreciating some of my new things like the cherry tree.

  3. Best wishes to Ward.

We are way behind you in terms of garden/orchard produce. We are just ending strawberry season. My husband is still talking about the pie I made from them so I must have done an okay job. :) Cherries start this week for us--hubby and kids will go to pick sweet and sour cherries.

Your cucumber picture looks more like celery or maybe seeded green pepper to me. You must have seeded your cucumbers before using them.

How nice of you to host a cookout for your coworkers! You are putting your new home to good use.

    1. The cucumbers are seeded, something I rarely do, but it was important for the texture of the soup. I thought they looked a little like celery, also. The soup was quite good and very refreshing on these hot days.

It's not like the picnic was fancy at all, but everyone seemed to enjoy it. People are already talking about next year. I guess I've started a tradition.

  4. Can you share your soup recipes. On really hot afternoons I would love a chilled soup for lunch.
Very happy Ward's surgery was successful and I hope his recuperation will be speedy with zero complications.
I love cherries but my kitchen always looks like a sloppy vampire was in it when I am finished pitting

    1. I will post the recipe in a separate post because it's easier to read that way. Maybe after I get home from work today.

I take all kinds of precautions with pans under bowls under pans and there still seems to be cherry juice everywhere. I'm not sure how that happens, but it does. So good to hear that I'm not the only one.

  5. I enjoy cucumber soup. Your post has reminded me to make some. But its so much better if they're fresh from the garden instead of the store. I love the yellow apple cucumbers but failed to plant this year.

    1. I don't think I've ever seen a yellow apple cucumber. I've seen yellow zucchini, but not a yellow cucumber. Do they taste much different?

  6. Best wishes of prompt recovery to Ward. I hope it doesn't get too hot in your neck of the woods. Those cherries look delicious. My mom is picking hers too and I really wish we had cherry trees down here!

    Have a great week!

    1. It is too hot, but you know all about that. There is always a trade off. You may not have cherries, but you have oranges. I would take oranges over cherries any day.
