Thankful Sunday, November 20, 2016

I am thankful for my new house.

The moving trucks showed up and we've actually moved! We have enough stuff in our new house that this is where we sleep at night. Now to empty the boxes and figure out how to fit things into their different spaces.  I think we have have all of the utilities switched including the internet that we got turned on yesterday.  It was a nice break to not have it for a few days, but I'm happy to be connected again. You may we remember that we are a dinosaur family with no smart phones or devices with internet.

The cats are adjusting better than we had expected, but still need a lot of attention. Both to calm them and to keep them out of places they shouldn't be. They have already figured out how to get around one barrier we set up. So much for the theory that our geriatric cats couldn't jump that high.

The old house now needs some serious painting and other cosmetic fix ups so it can go onto the market. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm really looking forward to concentrating on only one house. Soon enough.

Below are a few pictures from our move.

There are a lot of moving companies out there, some good and some shady. I picked one after selecting three to interview from Angie's List and the BBB. They all seemed good so I chose the one with the cheapest hourly rate since local moves are charged by the hour. We did all of our own packing and had already moved some of the more delicate things ourselves before moving day. They did an excellent job and we will definitely use them for our next move when we move the things we left for staging.

All of our boxes had both a color code and writing on them to help the movers to know what room things went into. We had the tape on all four sides and the top so they wouldn't have to rotate the box to find the label. If you study the list above, you may notice that we have a Bedroom #2 and a Master Bedroom, but are missing a Bedroom #1. When we were boxing things, we were too tired to go find another color of tape, so they didn't get labeled. However very quickly the movers figured out if the box didn't have a label, it went into Bedroom #1.

Each room also had a sign to identify which room it was.

So far, we have not found one misplaced box. I think the organization also sped things up because the move came in under estimate. All three moving companies estimated approximately the same amount of man-hours for our move and they finished two hours faster than that.

  1. Yay! You are home! Does it feel like home, yet? On your behalf, I am looking forward to you and Ward being done with the old home. Owning two homes does sound like a lot of extra work, especially in the case of getting one home onto the market, and the other, settled into. Best of luck to you!

    1. We've been here for only 2 1/2 days, so I wouldn't say that it exactly feels like home, but it does feel like where we're supposed to be. Thanks for your encouragement.

  2. Hooray for you! You are so organized that I know you thought of this ... making sure toilet paper and soap were where you could easily locate them. :)

    1. That we had under control. However, when the cable guy came to hook things up we couldn't find the cord to plug in our TV. While Ward was opening boxes, I went back to the old house to look for it. We eventually found it with the printer cable. Luckily, it was in time to test things before the installer left.

  3. Yay! You're sooo organized! I'm sure that helped. I sorta can't imagine moving at this point in my life... although, thanks to the carpet beetles, I think it would be much easier than it otherwise might have been!

    1. Moving is never easy and the longer you've been in a place the harder it is. I got rid of LOTS of things before we moved and we still had a lot. This definitely has not been easy, but I think it's been a good thing. Changing things up every once in while is good exercise for your brain and soul

  4. The thought of moving to a new home is exciting and fun but in reality, It's a Lot of WORK! I believe, my husband and I are done, with moving.

Have fun, decorating and enjoying your new digs!

    1. I believe we're also done with moving for a very long time because it is a lot of upheaval and work. I think we're finally to the part of this process where it is exciting. Hooray, at times it seemed like we would never get here.

  5. So happy you have moved in and had what looks like a sunny day in which to move, too! Sounds like your organization and hard work before hand paid off as the move took less time than estimated. Now comes the fun part of settling in and getting the old house ready for the market! Wishing you the best on both fronts!

    1. The weather was perfect for moving. I found it a little cold, but the movers who were really hustling found it just right. And most importantly, no rain or snow. The settling in part is fun as we try to see what works in the new space. Getting the old house ready--not so fun, but there is a finite number of things we have to do there.

  6. Congratulations on the move! I know it is hard juggling 2 homes, but you had the luxury of having somewhere else to live while you were renovating house 1 and somewhere to live while getting house2 ready for the market. I hope the remainder of the process goes smoothly!

    1. We lived in our other house while renovations were being done there and essentially used a microwave, ice chests, and the laundry sink for a couple of months. So I understand that we are lucky to be able to do it this way. Now, if I could just stop worrying about how expensive this luxury is. I need to remind myself of the recent message from you blog, "Just hug you kids and the ones you love." That is what is really important.

  7. Congratulations! Love the ranch style with the large front porch I hope you will be very happy there. Here's hoping the sale of your other home goes smoothly and quickly for you.

I've moved quite a few times and thought I had a good system in place by wow you blew away my strategies with the color coding and marking of the rooms, in the new house.

    1. While it is not the large old style front porch I grew up with, we are thrilled to have this front porch.

I know that you've moved many more times that I have, and I bet you are pretty good at it--especially since you've become a minimalist.

  10. Yay! Congrats! I agree with the others, it's a beautiful house and the color-coding is such a good idea. I've labeled boxes before but the color-coding looks so much more efficient. More yays and woohoos :o)

    1. I thought the color coding was great and an easy visual to see. Then my sister asked, "What if someone is color blind?" I hadn't thought of that so that's why we had some writing in each piece of tape.
