Thankful Sunday--July 26, 2015
I am thankful for a visit with Theo.
I think I am typical of most mothers. I always enjoy being with my kids. Well actually, there were a few times when they were growing up, that I was happy to be away from them. But these days, it's a pleasure. And yesterday was one of those days when we got to see Theo in his element at horology school. Clocks and watches can be complicated, beautiful machines and we found it interesting as he explained some of them that he was working on. For this time together, I am thankful.

I learned a new word from you--horology. :) Glad you had a fun time with Theo and glad to know I'm not the only mom who has ever wished for a little time away from my offspring. ;)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know the word horology either until he told us that was what he wanted to study. And if I'm quite truthful, Wally and Theo were not the easiest of kids, and there were more than a few times that I wanted to be away from them. But life is good now. Thank goodness they all eventually grow up.
DeleteI learned the word horology also, so I don't have to learn another thing today! Woopie! I can move on an be a bum the rest of today. Glad you got to spend time with your son. As he can tell you the clock never stops and we never get this moment again.
ReplyDeleteI had 3 very normal sons (meaning they dipped their toes in all kinds of ponds). Two are fully grown and one is mostly grown. (Notice I understand more than the 21st birthday = true adulthood) I loved them all the time, but there were times I didn't like them much less being around them.
Being grown is indeed more than a number. And from my experience, boys generally grow a little slower than girls. Actually, scientific research confirms that.

It's a rather long, complicated story that does not begin in his childhood. While he liked to see how things worked, I wouldn't say that he was the kid who was always tinkering with something including clocks.
DeleteJump ahead to his last year of college where he was studying Financial Economics and starting to interview for jobs. Hearing about the kind of work he'd do with this degree as well as a summer internship in the field convinced him that he didn't want the kind of jobs that were waiting for him.. He was starting to feel trapped so he looked around for alternatives.
First, he thought about what he wanted in a job--tangible results, his own boss, not a lot of competition, etc. Then he looked into several fields and came up with horology. A few years before, we had taken a tour of the school he's in now as part of a tour package involving several factories. He remembered that he was impressed with what they did and set up an interview.
We didn't know any of this was going on until he told us he had an interview the next day. We were upset in the beginning, because he didn't intend to finish his economics degree right then. But after we saw how much happier he was when he began his new path, it was easier. We hadn't realized how unhappy he had been until we saw the change.
Two years later, he is very happy with his decision and so are we.
Another time, I may actually talk about the school experience. It's very different than most of them out there.
That is fascinating, that he is involved in that field. I never knew it existed as a job option.
ReplyDeleteI had certainly not thought much about it until he became interested. There are so many kinds of jobs out there, I'm sure there are many I don't know about.
