A Second Look--April 30, 2014

Here are some things I saw this week during a

The bluebirds built a nest in this box about a week ago. Now they are taking turns guarding it and going inside.

So far, this activity has netted four eggs for the bluebirds. Meanwhile the chickadee has started to sit on her six eggs.

  1. My daughter picked grape hyacinths for me this morning. They aren't completely blooming yet, but there's something so sweet about your 8-year-old saying, "I have flowers for you, mommy!" The forsythia is out here and the lilacs are budding. You have a lot more green where you are.

  2. It's just been in the last couple of weeks that things have really taken off--meaning we have to mow grass now in some areas. Do grape hyacinths do well inside?

    1. Yes, if you cut them, they will last a few days inside. Sadly, since our kitchen reno, I have lost my little bud vase which was the perfect size for them.

In response to Everyday Life's comment below, the fun thing about chickadees is that they have one of the few bird calls I can actually recognize--"chick-a-dee-dee-dee".

  3. I always love your birds. So colourful. And is a chickadee really called a chickadee? Sounds like something out of Disney!

    1. Kris is right about the chickadee calls. Apparently, this is what they say when they are signaling an alarm. The greater the danger, the greater number of "dees" at the end. From the brief research I have done, it looks like you do you have chickadees in Europe. They are members of the larger tit family.

  4. I can't wait until our weather catches up with yours. I've been watching our birds and was happy to see our chickadees returned, we also have more cardinals than ever before and I'm going through birdseed faster than I thought was possible.

    1. Some years we have a lot of cardinals, but not as many this year. However, I do regularly see a pair at the feeder. And the chickadees--they're cute, aren't they?

  5. Those bluebird eggs are so beautiful! I think I would have a difficult time keeping myself from touching one of them.

    1. Bluebirds are just pretty all around--from their blue eggs to their orange chests to their blue backs. I'm glad we have them.
