Thankful Sunday--January 5, 2013

I am thankful for my stainless steel mixing bowls.

We got a stainless steel set of mixing bowls for a wedding gift many years ago. They are still as good as new, and we use them daily. I was thankful for them when I got them, and I am even more thankful for them now.

Do you have something simple like my mixing bowls that is invaluable to you in the kitchen?

  1. Ours are not stainless steel but we got our mixing bowls for our wedding too and they are still my favorite!

    1. My son wants a set of bowls like I have, but I haven't been able to find them. However, he got another version of them for Christmas. I hope that they serve him well.

  2. I have a fascination with kitchen stuff. My mom got us glass bowls which are suitable for microwaving, mixing, and serving and I love those. One of my son's Christmas presents was a "pancake pen"--you put the batter in it and can make all sorts of shapes for pancakes--I'm hoping it will make cooking even more fun for him.

    1. Pancake pen. Now that sounds like a lot of fun. Have you used it yet? How well do the shapes hold up?

  3. I found it at Williams Sonoma for around $10. He used it yesterday and had fun with it--the longer shapes are hard to flip and keep in one piece. He seems to like writing letter formations with it. His Saturday morning "job" is to make pancakes for us--trying to keep him interested in working in the kitchen.

    1. I don't know what your TV rules are, or how old your son is, but I have two nephews that got interested in cooking from cooking shows on TV. They are quite good cooks now as adults. Also, if I weren't on a low spend kick and trying to get rid of stuff out of my house, I think one of those pancake pens would be fun to have.

    2. I totally get the reduce-the-clutter kick--I find myself weeding through "stuff" several times a year. The kitchen renovation helped us get rid of a lot of it. I was a little hesitant to get the pancake pen because of adding to the clutter, but I think it will be like my cupcake carrier--useful for a few years and then I'll donate it to someone who has younger kids and will appreciate it.

We don't have cable but my husband likes to cook and watches ATK as well as a few other cooking shows on PBS on Saturdays. The kids, especially my son, watch it with him. I want my kids to have basic life skills by the time they graduate from high school--cooking, cleaning, laundry, money management, etc.--but if there's a way to incorporate fun into a task, I'm all for it.

    3. I tried to make sure that my kids had all of the basic skills that you want your kids to have and I think that they do. However, when my first son went away to college, I sort of panicked. There was so much more I meant to get around to teaching him. But I had to remember that some things he had to teach himself if he were really going to learn them.

  4. I would like to have a set of stainless steel bowls my main mixing bowl belonged to my grandparents, it is a milk glass and is so pretty

    1. I bet you have mixed feelings about that bowl. You have such limited space that everything has to have a purpose, and if it has a purpose and looks pretty, then you've hit the jackpot. However, I'm sure that you're worried about breaking your grandparents' bowl.

  5. I'm rather fond if my glassware (mixing bowls, baking pans, etc), though I've also been thinking for some time that I'd like some stainless steel bowls too.

    1. I grew up with glass mixing bowls and now have stainless. For me, I'd say that it's almost a toss up with the stainless winning out in the end. Actually, I think the shape and size are more important than the materials that they are made from.
