Thankful Sunday--February 17, 2013

I am thankful for lotion.

During these cold, dry winter days, I am thankful to have lotion to use on my very dry skin. I have tried many different brands and some of them work better than others. However I can never remember which ones they are when I'm at the store, so I buy what ever strikes my fancy at the time. (In case you're interested, this one seems to work pretty well but can be a bit messy to rub in.)

Do you have a favorite lotion?

  1. I actually had to give up lotion a few years ago for several reasons. I read a horrifying article about how anything that's absorbed into your skin actually makes it into your body, so you shouldn't put anything on your skin that you wouldn't put in your mouth. I also have such terrible allergies that some lotions actually make my skin situation worse. I had a really bad bout of nummular eczema about 5 years ago and gave up pretty much all personal care products.

BUT - along the way I discovered some great alternatives... My favorites are jojoba oil, coconut oil, and something called NaPCA, which is actually a salt found naturally in human skin that pulls water out of the air and naturally hydrates the skin. It works GREAT with no slime factor!

    1. I'm intrigued by the NaPCA. Where do you buy it?

    2. I usually order it here:

They make it with aloe too, but I prefer the plain stuff - the aloe one always leaves my skin feeling like there's a slight film on it. It's really magical stuff!

  2. I stopped using lotions as well both for the ingredients in them and the fact they never really made much of a difference. Now I use coconut oil and will sometimes break off a bit of an aloe leaf for quick healing.

  3. I'm with you! I prefer Cetaphil but after reading the comments here I'm thinking of trying coconut oil.

  4. I have also stopped using lotions because of all of the chemicals, but I make my own from coconut oil, cocoa butter and olive oil. My recipe makes about a cup and I've been using it for almost a year, so a little goes a very long way!

I've posted the recipe if anyone is interested: http://www.economiesofkale.net/homemade-body-butter/

  5. I like CeraVe. It's one of the few things I can put on my face, without causing an eczema flare-up. I use the lotion as both as face wash and moisturizer. For the rest of my body, I often add oil to the bath (makes for yucky clean-up of the tub, though), and that seems to help a lot.

  6. I'm partial to the Aveeno lotions that have no fragrance and include oatmeal.
