    I never thought to use a pump, what smart children they are. Were they able to blow them up with out popping them?

      I think the point was to see how big the balloons got before they popped. Thus, Theodore was wearing ear muffs to protect him from the sound when they burst. He hated loud noises, but anything for an experiment.
