Food Waste Friday and True Food Confessions--Nov. 14, 2013

It's time for Food Waste Friday, when the Frugalgirl encourages us to post pictures from the previous week of wasted food from our household. This accountability hopefully will help us to be more careful with our food and maybe save some money. Also, I am using this public forum to encourage us to eat out less which includes better meal planning. You can follow how we are doing in this endeavor by reading True Food Confessions. (Thanks to Jo from Simply Being Mum for sponsoring FWF this week.)

This Week's Food Waste

Who knows?

I don't remember any waste but we're into day 21 of our construction and I've hit the wall. Meaning living in cramped quarters with near constant loud noise is wearing on me. Trying to keep on schedule, the workman have been working into the night. I really appreciate their dedication, but nevertheless, it's wearing on me. However, the good news is that we now have level floors which is what started this whole thing.

After the floors were leveled, we had oak put down so that the entire downstairs has the same flooring. Above are some before, during and after pictures of this.

This Week's True Food Confessions

Amidst the noise and the dust, we've just about given up on cooking at home. Eating at home now means eating Chinese takeout in our basement instead of at the restaurant. However, we did manage to cook bacon and eggs one night in the microwave, and we've had a few frozen dinners and bowls of cereal at home, but that's about it.

On the other hand, I had the best veggie burger I ever remember having at a new burger place we tried (Kraze Burger) and we had a decent meal at a grocery store one night. Over the weekend while we were out of town for the day, the whole family went to IHOP for their fix of pancakes and sausage. Not sure what the upcoming weekend holds, but the counter tops and sink are now scheduled to be installed just before Thanksgiving.

Until next time...

  1. Wow! Your project is coming along! Your floors look gorgeous. My husband started demolition on our kitchen today. My project (thankfully!) will be much shorter than yours unless we hit an unforeseen snag. I get to start pulling out microwave re-heatable foods today. I have taco meat, sloppy joe meat, cooked chicken... if you can put it on a bun/taco shell/tortilla, I've got it! :)

  2. What all are you doing in your kitchen? I've heard about construction/remodeling woes, but we've never had anything this big done before. I knew we would be cramped and without somethings for a while, but I didn't realize how much I would get tired of the dust and noise. And the poor cats. They are definitely stressed. However, I have no complaint with our contractor. He and his men work very hard and are here every day early. There's just a lot of details to things that you don't realize.

You are more coordinated than we were with the food. I had some freezer foods ready, but not enough. Good luck. I want to hear about your progress.

    1. We are replacing cabinets, countertop, etc., and putting pull-out shelves in an old closet that was made into a pantry, and replacing a pocket door which closed off the kitchen to the back entry. My husband completed the demo today and there is definitely some water damage behind where the sink/dishwasher used to be but I don't think it's anything terrible (hopefully!). We've done lots of other projects and I don't think I was ever as stressed as I am about this one. Even when our bathroom was torn up for months. Not sure why I'm feeling this way. I think your project is bigger than mine and I don't envy you in the least, but you'll have a much nicer home when you are done.

So far our cat is enjoying all of this (except the noise). He's been hopping into old cabinets and we had to cover electrical wires to keep him from chewing on them.

I would have had a hard time freezing multiple week's worth of foods. And I'm already tired of washing dishes in the bathroom.

I'm enjoying pictures and stories of your progress!

    1. As a last minute decision, we changed the color of the floors from a more yellow to a more brown. So, sometime in the future when we can move all of the stuff out of the living room, we will have to have that floor redone so it will match the rest of the downstairs. It never stops. However, the color change was a good one.
