An Abundance of Cruciferous Vegetables

Or Another Record of My Wandering Thoughts, also Known as Speed Blogging or This and That.

Only three turnips came up (Not gonna use as many old seeds next year.), but they were a good size. I was afraid they might be woody since they were so big, but they weren't.

Yesterday, I harvested all of the radishes and turnips in our little garden. We added radishes from a friend and roasted a large sheet pan full of them. And while they were roasting, turnips were boiling on the stove. We had good eats for supper, but when I returned to the house after being out, it stunk! All of that lovely sulfur from the veggies was wafting through the air. Luckily, a couple of hours of the exhaust fan helped. But what's for lunch today? Radishes, turnips, and broccoli because, you know, you can't have enough of those cruciferous vegetables. : )

Speaking of broccoli, when we went to our first pregnancy class, the instructor was talking about a healthy diet and sang the praises of broccoli. That made a big impression on Ward, who encouraged me to eat broccoli often. However, my stomach said it only wanted white food--saltines, boiled chicken, and boiled potatoes.

And while Ward was paying attention to the nutrition part, I didn't hear much after they said it was common to get stretch marks on your buttocks. What?! I understood them on your stomach, but not on my bottom. You may wonder how that turned out. However, I don't think I will go into where various stretch marks are or are not located on my body. You're welcome.

And speaking of smelly food, we had a fish fry for my father-in-law's 92nd birthday over the weekend. We usually have these family events at his house, and this was no exception. The weather was touch and go with rain starting and stopping, but in the end, we were able to have it outside. The fish was slated to be fried outside under a tarp, rain or shine, because of the smell. It turned out well, and a good time was had by all.

There goes the timer. Times up!

Until next time...

  1. Those turnips look good! Three are better than none and you had radishes, too. I tried to grow turnips once and they didn't grow too big.
Too funny about the stretch marks. :D
Happy belated birthday to your father-in-law! The fried fish looks good and now I'm thinking that I haven't had any fried fish in a while.
    Have a lovely day, June.

    1. I'm not a big fish person, fried or otherwise, but these were good. I usually grow turnips in the fall where the cold weather can make them sweeter and you can leave them in the ground for a long time. I probably should have harvested them sooner, but they were still good.

  2. I have a picture of my FIL holding a huge turnip. I don't really like them, but my husband does. Maybe if they were roasted .... that definitely improves the taste of veggies for me.

The advantage of getting older is that you can't see your stretch marks with failing vision. 😉

    1. I didn't use to like turnips, but one time I had some really sweet ones with little bitterness. Every time I have turnips now, I imagine those and that let's me put up with the more bitter ones. If that makes any sense. :)

  3. I like turnips but usually only plant them in the fall. And then the deer feast on them. I think I need to do something different!
I can oy imagine what my house would smell like if I fed Larry all those cruciferous veggies! The smell wouldn't be from the cooking 🤭
    Which fish was deemed best?

    1. The deer usually leave our turnips alone, but they love our tomato plants. :( Both fish types were well received, but I think the beer battered one was the favorite.

  4. An outdoor fish fry is an excellent idea.
Yep some veggies make the air smell a tad funky, but thankfully it does not last too long.

    1. The fish fry was a lot of work. If we were going to do it very often, we would invest in better equipment that would make things easier. However, beggars can't be choosers. :) Thankfully (for us anyway), the fryers went home with my BIL to be cleaned.
