What's shakin' bacon?

Here's a little of what's shakin. :)

The reading theme for this summer at the library was a Universe of Stories. To promote this theme, the teens made a a space-like-picture t-shirt. There were extras, so I made one for myself. It was an easy project and has limitless possibilities. The orange background was made by spraying a bleach solution on the shirt. The other colors came from sponge painting. We used to get Astronomy magazine and there was a picture in the same style on every cover, so I think the universe theme was carried out well. However, the shirt fits Theo better than me, so I passed it on.

And this is why we have AAA. One of our cars wouldn't start recently and we used our AAA membership to have it towed to the garage. AAA is expensive, but one use recouped all of our money and more. With only a couple of days of car shuffling, the car got fixed and all was well.

It's that time of year again when we have the community fair. I entered several things and won several ribbons. However, I am proudest of a 2nd place ribbon for this mini flower arrangement. Flower arranging is a stretch of my abilities, so I was happy to be rewarded for my efforts. I was especially happy since I grew the flowers for it.

Recently, I tried a tip from Kris that if you add a teaspoon of cornstarch to your cookies,  it will help soften them. I was skeptical, but it worked like a charm in the recent batch of cookies I baked. These were part of a host gift for a family we were staying with for my niece's wedding.

This year we added a meadow garden bed to our yard. We are still learning about these kind of flowers so we went to a local park to look at this one. It was a Girl Scout project and contained both annual and perennial flowers. I particularly liked the splash of red the fire hydrant provided.

This weekend Ward and I will be going to my family reunion in West Virginia. After that, we will be vacationing and visiting several sights in the state. For most of our visits to my parents over the years, we have been very focused on the getting there and spending maximum time with them. Now we can go to some of the places we have wanted to along the way. I hope to do a travel log, so tune in starting Friday to see where I go. (Of course, all is contingent upon connections, etc.)

Until next time...

  1. You have been busy! Congratulations on winning the flower arrangement ribbon, as well as all the others! I'm sorry about the car trouble, but, thank goodness for having the AAA coverage. Thank you for sharing the tip about the corn starch - my daughter loves soft cookies; I am going to try that tip! I hope you have a lovely holiday and I'm looking forward to your sharing it with us.

    1. I got a couple blue ribbons for flower specimens and a 3rd for my basil. However, after the flower arrangement, I most proud of the 1st place ribbon I got for our pears. Pears are new for us and we've been trying to figure out how to grow and harvest them.

  2. What???? You were skeptical about a tip from me???? Just kidding, I laughed when I read that. Here's where I learned this tip, and I steered you slightly wrong--it should be 2 teaspoons in a batch, not one. https://www.averiecooks.com/chocolate-chip-and-chunk-cookies/

I have had AAA for over 20 years now and wouldn't be without it. There have been many years when I haven't had to use it at all, but boy when you need it, it sure is helpful to have. Hope your car is on the mend!

    Your flowers are lovely!

Safe travels. Hope you have fun!

    1. The one teaspoon worked for me. I looked at the link and there's a good discussion about the texture of chocolate chip cookies there. I will probably refer back to it.

AAA is insurance. It's to help when there is a problem. And hopefully you don't have one all of the time, but when you do, it's invaluable. The car has had repairs and is working now.

  4. I don’t have AAA, I pay a little extra to my car insurance to have roadside assistance. You are right. One snafu and it’s worth it.

Your cookies look just like the ones my aunt used to make! They were a family favorite.

    1. My aunt was also known for her chocolate chip cookies. She made them for her bothers of which my father was one. It was a very sweet tradition. (Pun intended.)

  5. I love that T shirt. I've heard using clorox on black you can make some beautiful designs. Thanks for the cookie softening idea too!

    1. I was thinking of trying the t-shirt idea on a different color shirt. As I said, the there are so many things you could do with this.

My mother taught me to make softer chocolate chip cookies to add more flour or cut back on the butter. Both of those work, too, but the cornstarch is easier. After having not made cookies in a very long time, I might continue to make them to experiment on what I think is the perfect cookie.

  6. Oh, wow, it's after lunch, and now I want some chocolate chip cookies just like yours! Alas, I should not be eating cookies, especially wonderful, delicious chocolate chip cookies! (Part 549 of "Getting Old Sure Has Its Downsides, But Considering the Alternative, OK, I Guess I'll Live With It.") Have a great time in the "Homeland." Oh, good question I just thought of. Have you and Ward been watching Ken Burns' "Country Music?" All in all, I thought it has been pretty good, as I learned a lot of stuff I didn't know (and I've on-again/off-again on the music at various times over the years). Can't please everyone for sure, but it was interesting I thought. As a result, I just went out and bought a Best Of Emmylou Harris CD (nearby B&N).

    1. We have not been watching it, but I hope we can see it in the reruns. I have heard mixed reviews about it meaning, a critic thought they didn't involve enough historians in making it. Enjoy Emmy Lou. It's hard to go wrong with her. That reminds me. I should get some of good, old-fashion CD's to take on the trip.
