Food Waste Friday and True Food Confessions--Nov. 30, 2012

It's time for Food Waste Friday, when the Frugalgirl encourages us to post pictures from the previous week of wasted food from our household. This accountability hopefully will help us to be more careful with our food and maybe save some money. Also, I am using this public forum to encourage us to eat out less which includes better meal planning. You can follow how we are doing in this endeavor by reading True Food Confessions.

This week I'm mixing together my Food Waste section with my True Food Confessions section because they were all mixed up like I was. Let's just say that I haven't recovered from Thanksgiving travel and various other recent activities.

I'm not sure what we've been doing for food. We've had burritos and pizza out of the freezer, and sloppy joes another night that we cooked. Ward's favorite Chinese take out has blessed our table along with Subway sandwiches. We actually had a salad one night as well as some Oreos. There hasn't been much waste, but I know that I left half of a McDonald's breakfast burrito too long in the car one day for it to be safe to finish. So out it went.

I'm hoping that I can reset this weekend and get back on track. Expect a good report from me next week. I'm gonna think positive.

We did not eat any of these things this week. Consequently, we did not waste any of these things this week, either.

  1. I guess there's a good side to the meals you had this week, but I have to say the food pictured sounds better to me than what you ate. While I really don't care to cook much anymore I love a home cooked meal over subway or McDonalds.

    1. I certainly enjoy a home cooked meal over McDonald's, but I do like a veggie sub with avocado from Subway. I don't regularly have on hand all of the vegetables I can get there, so it's a treat sometimes.

  2. Some weeks just go like that. Meal-wise, I've spent a good part of this week trying to make sure we use up all the odd bits left over from Thanksgiving and my son's pizza-making night with his friends.
The Chinese take-out sounds especially wonderful to me right now.

    1. Ward loves Chinese takeout and we don't get it very often much to his chagrin. This week seemed like a perfect week to indulge in this since we didn't have much else planned.

As an aside, our phone number is one digit different than the local Chinese restaurant, and we get calls for takeout orders all of the time.

  3. I make soup on Friday. Save you leftovers in little butter tubs, label with date, and freeze right away. Put it in the crock pot along with broth/boulion/can of chicken noodle soup, water, spices from a recipe. Add the mushy stuff like pasta until last. Serve with a dollup of sour cream, a salad, and really good bread.

    1. That's a really good idea. I've started to do that, but can't seem to do it regularly. Do you have enough leftovers by Friday that you have enough for soup? Or does it take you a few weeks to build up enough for a good soup?
