Tis the Season

Elderly Annie does not bother the ornaments these days,
but does enjoy sitting under the tree and chewing on it.

We've been continuing to do a bit of this and that, getting in the Christmas spirit. Last night, we drove around with Christmas music playing, looking at lights. One of the local realtors sponsors a light contest. People enter, he produces a map, and then people vote on their favorite. The winner gets their December electric bill paid for by him.

So, armed with the contest map and some Christmas CDs, we set out. Some of the displays were huge like you see on TV, and others were more scaled down, but pretty all the same. We went along the route for a while when we found a neighborhood with great lights on almost every house. It was good enough that I will tell my friends about it. After that, it was getting late, so we went home and hoped to pick up the route another night.

Flowers from Ward

I've wrapped more presents and delivered my gifts to work. Speaking of work, Ward sent me a lovely Christmas arrangement at work the other day just because. He's nice that way. We had plans for Christmas and Christmas Eve, but they are up in the air now. Some work schedules may change, and Wally and Theo have COVID. The timing is just so that they may or may not be able to be out and about by Christmas. We shall see. We will save our immediate family celebration until we can all be together and do what's safest for everyone.

When I was growing up, after my oldest sister married, we waited to open presents and celebrate Christmas until she could be there. More often than not, it was after Christmas Day. The rule was that you could open any presents from friends on Christmas, but no family presents. I didn't mind. In fact, sometimes I didn't do my shopping until after Christmas when everything was on sale. I liked that. :)

I've been making candies to give out for some gifts. And, of course, I had to do quality control and sample along the way. If I'm going to do full disclosure about that, I feel a little like I'm on sugar overload right now. Good thing I made a pot of vegetable soup earlier. Maybe the soup and the candy will cancel each other out. :)

Gotta get ready for work this evening, so

Until next time...

  1. If no one saw you eat them, the candies do not count (BTW quality control is important) and if anyone did see you eat them, the soup will cancel the sugar overload. That's my story . . .

    1. I agree. Quality control is important. Ward thinks so, too. :)

  2. Annie looks so sweet under the tree! There's a lot of tree chewing going on at our house, too. And some climbing.

The Christmas lights contest sounds fun. I love driving through those neighborhoods where everyone goes all out with the lights and decorations.

Your flowers from Ward are so pretty! What a fun surprise.

I hope everyone recovers well from COVID, and in time for a merry Christmas.

    1. Annie is over 20 years old and doesn't do a lot these days except sleep and yell for food. It's fun to see her perk up around something new and show a little bit of her younger self.

  3. I showed the picture of Annie to my daughter. Cute cats always make her happy. Our kittens were leaving the tree alone, but we now have a few presents and gift bags under the tree so that has re-ignited interest in the tree. Always an adventure.

Ward is so thoughtful! What a lovely bouquet.

I hope your sons are over their bout with covid before Christmas!

We haven't done any "official" drives to look at lights but we do see them when we are out and about after dark. There is one across the street from our church that has a magnificent display, including a tunnel of lights over their driveway. My neighbor across the street has a big display this year. We have a few lights on our front porch but nothing to write home about. Do you put up outdoor light displays?

    1. We have lights on all of the bushes in front of our house. We also put up lights around the porch railing in the back along with a small lit tree. The lights in the front are for the neighbors and the lights in the back are for us because the family room where we spend a lot of time looks out over the porch in the back. Neither set is anything to write home about, but we like them.

  4. So lovely to see Annie sitting under the Christmas tree. Is she still missing Leo? Dancer likes to chew on the Christmas tree, too!
That's a beautiful flower arrangement and it looks like it might have some hyacinth plants tucked in there, too!
I hope that Wally and Theo recover quickly and you will be able to enjoy your family Christmas when everyone is able to get together.

    1. Which ones do you think are the hyacinths? I don't see any traditional ones in the arrangement, but I don't know what the green ones are in the corners. You know your plants, so l'm curious.

I don't think Annie is missing Leo so much anymore, but she does want constant attention from us either to be petted or fed. But who really knows what goes on in a cat's mind?

  5. Your arrangement is so beautiful! I’m so sorry the boys have Covid. My husband came home with strep throat and an upper respiratory infection, so we may be doing things a little different depending on how he feels. I hope everyone feels better soon! The light contest sounds so fun!

    1. I have continued to put packages under the tree, but have left Annie's spot open, and she visits there several times a day.
