O is for Outdoors

 or Is It Out-of-Doors

Outdoors, out-of-doors, or outside. I never really thought about the differences among those words until now, when I was thinking about an O post. Upon further investigation, I figured out that outside is a noun while outdoors and out-of-doors are synonyms for adverbs of place. Makes sense when I think about the context in which they're used. Now the next question. If we say out-of-doors, why don't we say in-of-doors? The answer for that will just have to wait until another time. For now, here are a few pictures of a recent hike that I took with Ward and Wally out-of-doors.

The trail began along these rocks.

Then it went down a hill where we hiked along a river for a while.

And along railroad tracks. The trail went back up the hill before we went through the tunnel.

The woods were mostly gray, but we did see some color like this old forsythia hedge
at the edge of a clearing.

Yellow was the color of the day. Not only did we see the forsythia, we saw frequent clumps of this yellow wildflower,

And ever-tenacious dandelions popping up here and there.

  1. That looks like a fun hike. I bet it will so pretty there once everything starts turning green.

    1. This was a new area for us, so we'll have to go back and see it when all of the leaves are out.

  2. Thanks for the grammar lesson. I'm terrible with grammar. That looks like a peaceful hike. Wherever you are, it still looks pretty cold. But the burst of yellow looks warm. I like any kind of yellow flowers. They are just so cheery.

    1. This hike was over a week ago, so things may have greened up a little since then. However, we're not done with the cold yet with a freeze warning for tonight.

  3. I think I will fail in using those terms correctly. ;) Maybe if I have more caffeine and read this later, it will stick in my brain.

Our neighbor's forsythia hedge is slowly becoming yellow. We are getting snow now but I'm trying to ignore that. As ever, I love your hiking pictures. Does Ward mind when you stop to take pictures?

    1. No, he doesn't. I usually let him get ahead so I can snap him from behind and then catch up. He's not a particularly fast hiker, but he can go all day.

    1. It was a good hike. There was enough up and down that I got a good workout as well being in the woods.

  5. The hike must have been very nice.
We are experiencing serious green here! Everything is leafed out and the last of the blooming trees (apples in particular) are in full bloom.

    1. We have more green than gray here, as there are still a few kinds of trees that are just beginning to leaf out. We're about in the middle of our blooming season.

  6. Out-of-doors and in-of-doors sound like perfect substitutes for exit and entrance signs in buildings. I enjoyed seeing the photos of your hike. We're still experiencing colder-than-usual weather where I'm at and things haven't really greened up much yet.

    1. Speaking of colder weather, we're having a rainy day with snow and sleet mixed in today. I'm glad I convinced my husband not to plant some of the warmer weather plants last week because we have freeze warnings for the next couple of nights.

I like you idea for entrance and exit signs. :)

    1. It was a very nice hike and calm. Even though the weather was nice, we didn't see one other person on the trail. I liked that.

  8. Very interesting topic, the difference between outdoors, out-of-doors, and outside. That looks like a nice hike and a fun family activity. I wonder if the yellow wildflowers you saw were yellow violets (Viola pubescens). The leaves look like violet leaves.

    1. My first thought was also that they were yellow violets. However, the flowers don't fit. I'll figure out some day.

  9. You are skilled with words. I never thought why is there not an opposite to out-of-doors. Get inside-of-doors, words that could be used if a severe lightning storm began to get close. Like tomorrow, maybe I'll be yelling that, if the storm predicted hits.
