Tuesday 4, True Crime and Mystery

This week Tuesday 4 asks questions about true crime and mystery. Join me if you'd like.

1. Was there a notorious crime in the news that caught your attention or interest? Did you follow that case to it's conclusion?  If there was no solution, do you pay attention to news about the case long after? (for instance the Lindbergh kidnapping case... Patty Hearst, etc., ) I have followed various crime cases in the news, but never to the extent of every detail. However, one in particular that I followed closely was the Jon Benet Ramsey murder. Her mother was from WV and I had met her a few times at school functions. Also, her kids were the same age as mine. I still glance at any headlines I see about the case all these years later since it has not been solved.

2.Does the mystery genre of literature and movies interest you?  Does any one book ,series or movie stand out for you? In general, I'm not a mystery reader or movie watcher. I don't like the intensity of them. I'm more of a half-hour comedy type of person. However, the mention of Lindbergh's in the first question reminded me of a fiction book I enjoyed about the Lindberghs, The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin. I also have liked these mystery series: Alan Bradley's Flavia Deluce, Jaquiline Winspear's Maisy Dobbs, and Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache.

3.  Ever play Clue or any one of the new mystery games available?  Do you enjoy solving mysteries or puzzles? I enjoyed playing Clue as a kid and I played it with my kids, too. While I like a good mystery or puzzle, I don't try to solve them often. However, my husband and kids are excellent at them and they enjoy the challenge.

4. Some towns are known for mysteries that took place there.  Do you have something like that in your town or state?  If not.. how about telling us about something that has always puzzled you! It seems that every place has its share of mystery and ghost stories, but I don't know many of them. However, not far from where I live, they filmed the Blair Witch Project, a supernatural horror film. And in WV, there is the legend of the Mothman. In the mid-1960s, people claimed they saw a 10' creature with wings and red eyes.

  1. I tend to follow big crime stories peripherally, for the most part. Some local stuff I will follow more closely. It makes sense that you would have followed the Jon Benet Ramsey story, since you knew the mother.

I discovered the Maisie Dobbs series last year and I really enjoy it. I'm not a huge mystery novel reader but if I want something light to read, I will pick up an Aunt Dimity novel, or something from the Hamish MacBeth or Agatha Raisin series by MC Beaton.

I can't think of any mysteries in our town or state except for the ongoing Bigfoot "sightings". It's mostly done in fun, although I do have a young man in my young adult group who believes in it.

    1. I tend to like cozy mysteries better than true grit, thriller ones. I'll have to remember M. C. Beaton when I am looking for a light read. I know they are very popular. I see that Hamish Macbeth mysteries were made into a TV series. Have you seen it?

    2. No, I haven't. I have found that the earlier books in both series are better. You might prefer the Aunt Dimity series. I can't remember the author but they are definitely a curl up on the sofa on a cold day kind of books.

  2. I would have been morbidly fascinated with the Ramsey case if I had a personal connection with it.
I like gritty mysteries and thrillers, though one night I did give myself a black eye while dreaming after reading a thriller about a killer who tortured people by blinding them prior to killing them. In my dream he was attacking me and I was fighting him off of my face.
I can't think of any exciting cases or urban myths around here that are worth mentioning.

    1. Wow, a black eye! That's some dream. One reason I don't like to read about gritty killers is my mind is too busy to sleep well after reading or seeing them.

    2. Wow, that's an intense dream. I had a dream one night in which I was kicking off attackers. Turns out I was kicking my husband. Thank goodness he has a good sense of humor.

    3. I thought I was an active sleeper, but I don't think I've beaten anyone up (including myself) while sleeping. :)

  3. Not a fan of true crime and mysteries, either. Haven't heard of mothman, before! His wings look more like those of a vulture than a moth's, though! :)

    1. I'm not sure why they call him Mothman rather than Birdman. Theory is that the original sighting was of a giant owl. Then it got a life of its own and people all across the US claim to have seen it.

  4. I heard about the MOthman mystery. Wasn't there a movie (or two) made of it? That is fascinating you met Mrs. Ramsey. That was so tragic. We used to play Clue as kids also.

    1. I haven't seen it, but there was a Mothman movie in 2002 starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney. It was described as a horror mystery.
