This Week's Food Waste
No one at my house likes this. |
This week I had to get rid of some moldy cranberry sauce. I got it to use on ham roll ups, but it turns out that no one likes it that well. I knew that I didn't like it and I found out the others only like it with Thanksgiving turkey. News to me. Thankfully I only bought a small can.
This Week's True Food Confessions
A sampling from our dinners this week. |
This was a very busy week during which we started out cooking, but couldn't keep it up. After having a very tender pork roast that we cooked in the pressure cooker, mashed potatoes, zucchini continental, hot dogs, and spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and spinach, we began grabbing what we could. We had frozen dinners, snacks, pizza, sub sandwiches, and a church dinner. When things got really busy, we probably could have had more home cooked meals utilizing the crock pot and make ahead casseroles, but we weren't that coordinated. Maybe next week.
I think cranberry sauce is right up there in the love it, or hate it category. It has a bitter quality that a lot of people just don't like. So I can't fault anyone for not eating it!
ReplyDeleteIf you do happen to buy a small can at Thanksgiving, you can freeze it, the later use the leftovers in a glaze for chicken or pork roast. With a little orange juice and ginger, the cranberries go unnoticed.
It's interesting that no one really likes it that well. At Thanksgiving, there is always a large crowd and I thought that everyone but me was enjoying the cranberry sauce. Well, apparently I'm not that observant. I'm not going to buy it again unless we're taking it to someone house.
DeleteGood job with only 1 can of waste. I am not a fan of the cranberry sauce either ! The zucchini dish looks amazing !
ReplyDeleteSomeone just gave us another zucchini last night. I'm torn between making chocolate zucchini bread that Frugal Girl has featured or another zucchini, feta cheese dish that we tried a couple of weeks ago. Both seem really good to me right now.
DeleteI love cranberry sauce. Your homemade meals look delicious.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your nice words about our homemade meals. I'll use that as encouragement during the upcoming week.
DeleteI don't like cranberry sauce by itself, but I don't mind it in other things. I've seen some yummy-looking recipes in the past that call for it but I know no one in my family would enjoy it so I haven't bothered.
ReplyDeleteMy extended family really likes a cranberry relish dish that calls for fresh cranberries, pineapple and oranges. This one I can eat a little of, but I'm not a fan of it either. I think its like Lili said, you either like cranberries or not.
DeleteGood job with almost no waste. I LOVE cranberry sauce, but it's not for everyone. Also, wanted to let you know I nominated you for a Beautiful Blogger Award. Check it out: http://www.doggonethrifty.com/2012/09/07/beautiful-blogger-award/
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nomination Rebecca.
DeleteWe tend to only have canned cranberry sauce when others bring it to contribute to a meal - usually turkey but sometimes chicken. (normally make it from scratch) We freeze leftovers and sometimes it's gone up to a year until our next meal and need for it. I've also seen leftover cranberry sauce used in a white choc chip cookie recipe w/nuts.
ReplyDeleteCanned cranberry sauce sits for a long time in the fridge before going moldy - how long was yours in there? Just wondering.
It was in there for a month. It had just started to mold.
ReplyDeleteI like canned cranberry sauce. I always thought the pattern left on it by the can was cool. :)
ReplyDeleteHow did you do the photo collage? I sure do like it.
Lisa
Lisa,
DeleteI use Picasa which is one of many free photo editing program. I downloaded it about a year ago and have been playing with it since then. If you click around, you should be able to figure it out collages and other features. For a while, I was comfortable with doing certain things on it and didn't explore much. Recently, I have figured out some other ways to make collages that I didn't know about before. The features were there all along, but I didn't take time to explore them. I think that is because I'm constantly torn between spending less time on the computer and learning new things there. I haven't yet figured out what is a happy balance for me. Good luck.
My mom serves cranberry sauce at least once a week. As a kid I always wanted to like it because it was so pretty, like a jewel on the plate. And like Lisa, I loved the pattern left by the can. Sadly, it tasted yukky. Every few years I would try again but alas, it still tasted bad. Then 2 years ago I went to the Thanksgiving lunch at my daughter's school, and thought I would give it one more try, and it was so yummy! I don't much like it plain on the plate, but I do like it mixed with turkey and gravy and stuffing, or as a generous spread on turkey or ham sandwiches. Also, my family and I love the crock pot recipe where you dump a can of cranberry sauce and a packet of Knorr's French Onion Soup mix on top of a beef roast and cook it on low all day. Makes a yummy sauce and tender meat. But I don't think that counts as liking cranberry sauce because you can't really taste the sauce at all.
ReplyDeleteCranberry sauce and onion soup--now there's a combination that I never would have come up with on my own.
