A Second Look, July 15, 2023

My thoughts are with the people suffering from the extreme weather we hear so much about in the news these days. While we are not having extreme conditions here, we are in the throes of summer weather - sweltering days with little rain. And we're all feeling it - me and the plants. Our rhododendrons' leaves are starting to shrivel. I've never had to water them before, but I have started hoping I can revive them. Thank goodness the rain barrel is still providing water. The water smells but is still good for the plants.

I've been watering, so the vegetable garden is doing okay. This past week we had the last of the spinach, broccoli, wax beans, and two kinds of squash from it. However, I didn't get any pictures - too busy trying to beat the heat. Anyway, here are a few pictures I did get from my Second Look.

This is the planter outside of Ward's shop. His father made it for him from an old water heater. Ward selects plants for it every year.

Not sure where the bird had been to get muddy feet, but it left tracks on our porch railing.

The hydrangea blooms are fading and turning pink.

More daylilies are blooming.

Miraculously the deer haven't eaten these hostas, and they are blooming.

Even though the wind drops a lot of pears, the trees are still full of growing fruit.

I  planted two sets of sunflowers along this fence, and this is the only one that came up. We'll see how it does because something has been enjoying its leaves.

Uncle Billy invited us over to pick in his blueberry patch.

I find it interesting that blueberries in the same cluster ripen at such different rates.

That's about it for this week. However, let me add that I am very thankful for a working air conditioner.

Until next time...

  1. Those blueberries look delicious. I have one tiny bush, and for years it gives me a handful of berries each morning during season. Too many, it would seem, for such a tiny bush. I love them. Your day lilies are gorgeous! I will try to get photos of my hydranga. The blossoms this year are so beautiful. The bush was here when I moved in over 16 years ago and still going strong.

    1. Uncle Billy works hard to keep his blueberry bushes growing including building a house around them with netting to keep the birds out. We are very lucky that he shares his bounty. Daylilies have very pretty blooms, but their leaves all turn brown this time of year. I guess the blooms distract from that. Looking forward to seeing your hydrangea.

  2. My husband and daughter went blueberry picking today. We are fortunate to live in an area with lots of fruit--a couple of weeks ago, they picked sweet and sour cherries. Yum!

    1. We are fortunate that we have Uncle Billy who provided us with strawberry and a blueberry picking this year. And speaking of fruit, I think peaches will be ripe here soon. I need to look at the farm stands. Always a treat to have a fresh peach. What are you going to do with your blueberries?

  3. Your flowers are beautiful and Uncle Billy's blueberries look great! The pears look great, too. Looks like something enjoyed that sunflower plant! :D

    1. The pears are looking good, but we have about another month before they're ripe. Here's hoping that end rot doesn't set in like it does many years.

We have had so much rain that we have barely had to water this summer.

    3. There have been a lot of popup storms in the area, but we usually don't get much if any rain from them. I feel like we're in some kind of rain shadow. But that's the weather. Always changing and highly variable.
