Oh, The Winds Were Blowing

Maine Vacation, Day 3

We woke up to the same weather we went to bed with--cold rain. That meant we had to change our plans a bit. The motel had a list of rainy day activities which included Thunder Hole and we decided to make that our first destination. Thunder Hole is a place along the shore in Acadia National Park where the rocks are in a bowl shape so that when the waves crash there, they make a loud thundering noise.

When we got to Thunder Rock, the wind was blowing the rain almost horizontally. With the wind and rain noise, I'm not sure if we heard the thundering or not. However, the waves were loud.

After Thunder Rock, we decided to drive the rest of the loop around the park. At this stop I got dry clothes out of my suitcase and changed out of my wet clothes. Despite our rain gear, parts of us were soaked from our Thunder Rock visit because of the driving rain. (Not sure why it was listed as a rainy day activity.)

After my dry clothes, I was able to enjoy the drive better.

Of all of the beautiful trees, I think sugar maple is my favorite.

This is a carriage bridge. Acadia National Park has a series of roads and bridges constructed by John D. Rockefeller from 1913 to 1940 for hikers, bikers, and carriages to enjoy the area.

We continued on the drive back to my sister's house. We took the long way home and explored some of the points and islands of the area. We saw a lot of big houses, but I didn't take pictures of any of them. We were out of the tourist areas and it seemed intrusive to do so. It rained the whole way home, but it was an enjoyable ride in our nice, warm, dry car.

  1. It looks like you were there close to the peak of the color season. Autumn is so beautiful. Thanks for the virtual tour!

    1. In the area where these pictures were taken, the leaf color was at its peak. We've barely begun to change colors here. What does it look like in your neck of the woods?

    2. It's about peak right now. We finally have a good weather day so I've enjoyed looking at the trees.

  2. We have our thundering areas along the coast too, but the tourists usually hit Devil's Punch Bowl. Too bad there was so much rain while you were there but the fall colors are beautiful. Maples turn the best shades in fall.

    1. We would have done more outdoor activities if the weather had been better, but we spent plenty of time outdoors all the same. The maple trees here have just started to turn and they are very pretty.

  3. Those photos are gorgeous. We have no signs of leaves turning yet, so I am envious of the colors!

    1. We are very late with the leaves turning this year. It may have something to do with the rainy year we've had. At this rate, they may go from green to brown, though.

  4. Such beautiful fall colors! And the scenery looks nice, even in the rain!

    1. It was pretty even in the rain. While it rained all day, it wasn't raining that hard by afternoon. That meant it was easier to enjoy our drive.

  5. On our 1997 trip to Bar Harbor, we had tremendous success seeing Thunderhole in her full glory. That was just an amazing experience, too. Thanks for taking me back to some fun memories!

    1. I think Thunder Hole needs another visit. Yet another thing to put on our list for next time. Thanks for your suggestions.
