Here are few things I saw this week
during a Second Look.

| Rozanne Geranium among the fallen oak leaves. |

| Begonias--They are getting a little leggy but are still blooming nicely. |

| There was a bloom on the cherry laurel. This usually blooms in the spring. (So much for the signs of fall.) |

| Rain over the weekend brought a new crop of mushrooms. |
 |
| The marigolds just keep coming. :) |

| I did my Second Look early in the morning before the dew had been burned off by the sun. You can see it in some of the pictures like this one. |

| In some areas the dew was frost. |
 |
| This skipper butterfly was waiting for it to warm up before it started the day. |
 |
| The mums are blooming at the new house. These are doing well in their sunny spot. Back here at the old house, the mums haven't bloomed yet. However, they are somewhat shaded. |
Oh wow! Are those mums that have been planted into the ground at the new house, or in pots? They look magnificent! Mine never get quite like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm just curious, have you ever been on a guided mushroom tour/hike? I know a lady, here, that did that once and thought it as quite interesting.
Those are mums planted in the ground. The mums at my current house look nothing like that. I think the sun has something to do with it as well as a warm and wet spring. No one has lived in the house since April, so I don't they got much attention this summer. We'll see what they do next year.
DeleteI have never been on a specific hike for mushrooms. However, my father-in-law is quite knowledgeable in that area and used to tell us a lot when we hiked with him. Even with study, I'm too afraid to eat mushrooms from the wild, so I've never studied them. However, I do like to look at them.
We haven't had a frost yet, but I think that's because we are insulated by Lake Michigan. Enjoyed your pictures today, as always. :)
ReplyDeleteBecause you are north of me, I always think that your weather is much colder. But I always forget about Lake Michigan. But then again, it gives you lake effect snow, right? A mixed blessing I guess.
DeleteYes, we definitely get lake effect snow. And sometimes lake effect rain. I find the climate information fascinating when the meteorologists talk about it. So many variables go into predicting the weather accurately.
DeleteThere are many variables involved in weather, it is still in its frontier stages of understanding. I'm not sure everyone appreciates that.

ReplyDeleteThe marigolds have especially given us a big bang for our buck this year. All of them came up on their own from seeds from last year and have been very prolific bloomers. I will have to remember to collect seeds and take them to my new place.
DeleteOh wow! If I had that many mums blooming I would have vases filled throughout the house!
ReplyDeleteThat would be beautiful. However mums are toxic to cats, so we will enjoy them outside.
DeleteThose mums are gorgeous! We are having fall weather here, this week - below average temperatures with highs only in the low 70s and cloudy.
ReplyDeleteSounds like perfect weather as far as I'm concerned. We've had highs in the 50's and 60's which is pretty darn good, too.
DeleteI'm trying to think exactly how many mums I have killed in my attempts to grow them. I know it can be done because other folks have them in their yards, but they probably need, ahem, more water than I'm willing to dole out. Next year when I WILL get organized enough to set up more irrigation hoses (this time for sure) I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, your photos are lovely as usual. I love the frost on the leaves. We've only had one frost event so far, and, well... I slept through it. It couldn't have been much of a frost though, since it didn't even kill the basil!
Some people consider mums annuals. I sometimes takes other's spent mums that they've just bought for color in the fall and plant them. Occasionally, they take hold. But overall, my current yard has too much shade for them to be vigorous.

I love marigolds, the deep colors! That's an interesting colored butterfly, I'd not heard of that "brand". We've had no frost yet, but should not be long. Lots of rain though and I saw some huge "shrooms" sprouting out back.
ReplyDeleteI like the deep colors of the marigolds also. I tried to get flat petaled ones because the birds and butterflies supposedly like them better. I love to look at mushrooms although I'm too scared to try to eat one from the wild.
