Thankful Sunday--July 3, 2016

I am thankful for family and food.

Theo has been staying with us for the last couple of weeks. Since he is self employed, he brought his work here and has been helping out as Ward is recovering from surgery. He was available for care giving in the early days while I was at work, and for heavy lifting these days when my skinny arms can't quite manage a big chore. We are very happy that he is here.

And an added bonus to all of this is that Theo has been cooking. We do a bit of planning together, but he initiates and does most of the meal prep. I act as his sous chef. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate someone else taking the lead in the kitchen. As most of you know, cooking is not an area that I'm much interested in. One day I came home from work and there was a hot lunch waiting. I was almost giddy. And the Irish hash we had last night was one of the best things I've had in a while.

So for this time with my son and the meals he is preparing for us, I am very thankful.

  1. That's really wonderful, live and learn. And I'm sure you and Ward are just enjoying having him around for conversation, too.

Have a great 4th of July!

    1. Theo is pretty quiet, but we do enjoy interacting with him on a casual level several times a day when he takes a break from his work.

    1. Who'd want perfect kids? Not me! But great kids, yes please! So glad Theo is being such a help, and hope Ward is making a good recovery.

    3. I asked Theo what he thinks we did as parents that influenced him the most. Kind of a hard question for someone whose not separated very far yet, but here's what he said. First, was that he came from a more stable home with fewer problems than many of his friends. Second, we set good examples of being kind to others and respecting your family.

So for what it's worth, there's a five minute analysis of Theo and Wally's childhood.

    4. Sometimes when you are struggling with your kids when they are younger, you wonder how they are going to turn out, but you hope for the best. Well, now that we are on the other side, we are relieved to know that all is okay. Our kids are great, not perfect, but great.

    1. Theo is more interested in cooking than his brother who would be very happy to eat peanut butter and jelly every day. I'm not sure, but that's actually what he might do.

  4. Lovely sentiments and do I ever share those you have. Since I never had daughters I have no comparison, but Son2 has been a Godsend. He moved back to Alabama from Portland to help with my dad's care during the last 2 years of his life. He is sticking around a bit longer to help with Mom. Fortunately he can work from anywhere, also.

    1. You mentioned that your son had come to help with your dad. That's pretty amazing. You must have done something right.

  5. What a good son! I love my older sons (22 and 20) but somehow I don't think it would occur to them to come back and help.

And having someone take over the meal prep and cooking? Well that sounds heavenly!

    1. In the middle of all of this Theo praise, let me say that my other son is also very considerate. It's just that he can't leave his job and stay here for a while. There, I have given equal time to both kids.

  6. I've thought of you often this past month and hoped your husband was doing well. How nice to hear your son has been able to stay with you and help out while your husband recouperates. I would very much love to have someone else do my cooking. :-)

    1. I think you and I view cooking the same way--a means to an end. So any help in that area is appreciated. BTW, you know about nice sons yourself--you have two very good ones.

  7. Yay! That is so sweet of him to come help out, and what a treat to have someone cook for you. Gotta say I peeked at the preview of this post a few hours ago when I just got home from a long bike ride, and that photo totally made me change my dinner plans from a tuna sandwich to a veggie burger! Yum!

    1. Glad you enjoyed your burger and got a break from beetle busting long enough to take a bike ride. You needed it.
