A Second Look--July 27, 2016

We continue to have hot and humid weather here with no rain. Even the promise of a thunderstorm has not materialized. And I'm getting tired of it. I generally try to be positive here, so I'm positive I am tired of the heat for many reasons, not the least of which I've had a migraine for about a week now. The heat is either causing my malady or most certainly aggravating it.

Okay, I think I'm done complaining.
Here are few things I saw this week
during a Second Look.

While many of the day lily are turning brown, there are a few still blooming.

The house finches continue to dominate the feeders.

But other birds do show up like this mourning dove.

The blanket flowers bloomed for the first time this week. These are volunteers from last year.

I think these are the same kind of mushrooms that grew quite large a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to watch them carefully to see what they do.

Coreopsis

These are four different groundhog holes in the back of the yard. They all have been enlarged recently.

Lantana

The tiger lilies are in full bloom now.

  1. Pretty pictures! We are hot and humid, but have had a lot of rain lately, which really increases the humidity!

    1. Well, you know what they say, "It's not the heat, it's the humidity." I think it's both.

  2. Lovely pictures. Sorry about the headache though - hope it goes soon.

  3. Beautiful pictures as always. I'm so sorry about your migraine. Those week-long ones really suck! My all natural crazy cat lady remedy is to take the following supplements: magnesium, feverfew, evening primrose oil, mixed tocopherol vitamin E, and curcumin (or turmeric). I wash it all down with a hefty dose of green tea - iced green tea in this weather! It usually doesn't make it go entirely away, but it makes it bearable.

    Hope you're feeling better soon!

    1. I take prescription meds that make it mostly better for a while, but it's always there and then flairs again. So I'm functioning okay, but about half speed and kind of cranky.

I have not taken your exact combo of supplements, but I did take a subset of them every day for several months for prevention and I saw no apparent change. I'm not sure there's anything out there that's magic for migraines.

    2. I agree about silver bullets - and I also don't think all migraines are the same - either from person to person, or from headache to headache. I've pretty much given up on the prescription meds because the side effects are sooo horrible for me. By the time the meds wear off I'm just so grateful to have lived through the experience that I no longer care if I'm in pain or not! I suppose that's a twisted sort of placebo effect, but honestly not the kind I'm looking for! And don't even get me started on the rebound headaches! So compared to "death by immetrex and/or it's cousins", I'm quite happy to accept whatever genuine placebo effect I can get from the natural stuff! :-)

Anyhow, I hope you're feeling better soon.

    1. We might get some rain this weekend. I hope it moves here from you.

  5. :( Sorry about your migraine. I've never had one for that long. Sounds awful.

I took the kids to the beach today--about the only place we could stand to be outside in these temps. The benefit to the hot weather is that Lake Michigan is finally a decent temperature (it was in the 50s for a looong time).

    Pretty pictures, as always!

    1. I'd like to say that these long migraines are a rare occurrence, but they're not. But at least I have medicine to take. I used to watch my father stay in a dark bedroom for days only to come out when he was sick. They didn't have immetrex and the likes back in his day.

A trip to the beach with water warm enough to go into sounds like the perfect day. How long before the water cools down again?

    2. Ah, I can get all nerdy sciency on you. :) See what happens when you are married to a fisheries biologist? It depends a lot not only on air temperatures, but on wind and waves. An upwelling can change the temps overnight. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/upwelling.html

  6. I ordered seeds of blanket flowers recently and I plan on planting them this Fall.

Your groundhog holes look just like our gopher tortoise burrows!

The mushrooms look very velvety. I love a good looking mushroom :)

Gorgeous pictures, thanks for sharing them with us. I hope your migraine goes away soon, it sounds very painful and debilitating.

    1. I was not familiar with gopher tortoises, so I looked them up. Very interesting. We don't have them around here, but you're right, the holes look like they could be made by them.

Good luck with the blanket flowers. I don't know how they'll do in your climate, but here they do well in heat. The flowers are very pretty, but the the leaves sometimes shrivel up. They might last all year for you, but here they are annuals. However, they reseed themselves fairly easily.

  7. Working in an air-conditioned workplace each day got me spoiled. And I am far behind weeding our garden, not feeling up to it when it is 90+ degrees with high humidity on top of it. It gives me time to catch up with reading your blog- posts.

    1. Thanks for visiting again. I am lucky that I live and work in air conditioning. My work is good now, but before this they were working on the cooling system for about a month. Then it was not so comfortable there either.

Weeding has been nonexistent here also. One thing about weeds though--they'll still be there waiting for us when the weather cools a little.
