Here are a few things I saw this week
during a Second Look.
I planted zinnias this year to attract more butterflies and hummingbirds. |
And while I have seen both butterflies and hummingbirds on the zinnias, they still prefer the feeders. |
And speaking of feeders, the chipmunks are not longer content to eat the seeds that fall under the feeder. |
Balloon flower (Platycodon) |
Day lily |
Hydrangea |
Hottuynia |
Milkweed beetles |
Day lily |
Coneflower. This is one of Ward's favorites because the crisscrossing spirals in the middle represent Fibonacci numbers. |
Coreopsis |
I had to look up Fibonacci numbers. I don't have a math brain. ;)
ReplyDeleteYour balloon flower is new to me--pretty! Well, maybe I have seen them before and didn't know what they were.
The buds on the balloon flowers look like a balloon thus the name. As the summer goes on, you will see more pictures of them and I'll try to include one of the buds.
DeleteI personally like streams of consciousness and I post mine often :)
ReplyDelete40 years? Wow. That's some frugal flowers. Have you lived in your house for 40 years?
The pictures are lovely, as always. That chipmunk made me laugh outloud! He's like a kid in a candy store :) What a nice, crisp picture of the hummingbird coming for a quick snack. I took the same picture yesterday but mine was all blurry. I have got to get a better camera, at least one with a faster shutter. I love the coneflower too. I don't like math so I wouldn't have recognized the Fibonacci sequence, but at least I had heard of it, and I agree that it's very pretty.
I hope your WV relatives are OK. I just read that WV had one of the best preschool programs in the nation, btw. I don't know why a lot of people keep making fun of the state, it has a lot going for it in my opinion. I've only ever been to Bethany College, 30 years ago, as a day trip when I was visiting my pen pal in Pennsylvania, but I remember it to be lovely.
We have lived in this house 19 years, but the people before us planted most of the day lilies about 40 years ago. However as trees have grown and we have more shade, some of the day lilies don't bloom any more. Sometime when I have nothing else to do, I should dig some of the non-bloomers up and transplant them or give them away so they can grow in more sun.
DeleteAs you can imagine, I am sensitive about people making fun of WV but it's something I've heard all of my life. I did a post a while back about WV. Maybe I'll run it again.
My daughter did a report about WV this past year for school. She gets very excited about WV--if you ran your post again, I bet she'd like to read it. :)
DeleteI do confess to breaking out in song whenever I hear "West Virginia" ... I enjoy a little John Denver now and again. :)
I'll have to find the post. As I remember, it was pretty general. It's hard to summarize a state in a few paragraphs.
DeleteAnd speaking of WV, June 20 was WV day (when WV became a state in 1863) and my sisters and I put together a WV week of activities for the nursing home where my mother is. We had coloring pages with state facts and symbols, WV cookie cutters that they made cookies with (decorated in blue and gold the state colors), a music CD made of only songs about WV that they played at meals and other activities, a couple of dozen WV flags to decorate with, trivia games, a state map that employees and residents marked where they were from and Mr. Bee Potato chips--the only potato chip made in WV. We assembled everything and left it last visit. Them the activities director and staff carried out the activities. Reports are that it was a big hit.
I never laugh at chipmunks. Even though they are cute to see, I live with so many and have to constantly battle their damage to my yard.
ReplyDeleteYour flower photos are beautiful, as always!
They are cute, but I know they can do a lot of damage. For instance, the hole in our garage door.
DeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen a milkweed beetle. I had to look it up. We have something called a milkweed bug, but it's a different species, according to its latin name.
I'm glad your weather is nice this week!
We have the milkweed bugs also. I'll have to pay attention this season and see what's what.
DeleteAbsolutely gorgeous flower photos. Love the balloon flower. I'd never heard of them before. Also love the Coneflower and the digging hungry chipmunk at the feeder.
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are really pretty this time of year before the hot, dry days of August have hit. I like taking pictures of them now.
DeleteLove how you captured the chipmunk! My sister has a bunch of bird feeders in her back yard, and it's funny to watch the squirrels, chipmunks and birds fight for the same food. :)
ReplyDeleteEven though there is plenty of nature food around of berries, nuts, and bugs, the critters all fight over the seeds. It is interesting to watch, but I wish the big eaters would get a little more of their food from nature.
