I am thankful for a clean freezer.
Yesterday we defrosted and cleaned our freezer. Luckily, our freezer doesn't accumulate frost very fast because we've been meaning to get around to this for a couple of years. Even though the freezer is not full, we did find a few good surprises--like some flour I had forgotten about. And the important part of the whole process is we put the freezer up on rollers. Now when we need to get behind it or have better access to the circuit box, it's just an easy roll to move the freezer out of the way.
So for a clean, easily movable freezer, and another job that can be crossed off the list, I am thankful.
That makes it easier.
ReplyDeleteIf truth be told, part of the reason of the freezer clean was that cat pee had gotten under it, so it needed to move. And since we were messing with it anyway, we defrosted and cleaned it.
DeleteAmazing what gets cleaned up when cats mess things up ... our cat had fleas this past winter so we did some heavy duty vacuuming/safe flea repellant. I burned out our vacuum doing it. Oh, and LOTS of laundry. But ... we really needed to do some of the work anyway. This just forced us into it.
DeleteWe had a bad flea infestation a few years back and it was a lot of work to finally get rid of them. We have indoor cats, but the boy from next door carried them in from his house. Our vet said that he rarely sees a bad infestation these days because of Frontline and other similar products. Of course, we weren't treating our indoor cats. I'm glad you've got things under control.
DeleteSimilar for us--our cat is an indoor cat but our friendly neighbor cat isn't. My daughter can't keep her hands off the neighbor cat ... sigh. It hasn't really been a bad infestation but I.hate.indoor.bugs.
DeleteWhat an accomplishment! I really have to deal with mine. I've eaten it down to where there's not much left in it, but still more than I can fit in my regular freezer - I must get more disciplined about not buying more until what's in there is gone and the thing is defrosted.
ReplyDeleteWe waited for a cool day and used ice chests while defrosting. Our refrigerator freezer is pretty full, so I will be moving some of the things to the chest freezer in the basement. I like the every day one to be fairly organized--meaning, I don't want anything to fall out on my head when I open it. :)
DeleteHa! Well, I'm definitely guilty of having "Fibber McGee's freezer!" And ice chests... that's a brilliant idea, why didn't I think of that?
DeleteIt is surprising what gives us joy isn't it? I defrost mine on the same timeline you use, though I declared last summer (after about a 3 year wait) I am going to start doing it yearly just so it won't frost too badly. Now, ask me in August if I followed through.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the follow through. I'll be asking in August. :)
DeleteI'M thankful that defrosting the freezer is something my husband does. He's the one who does most of the filling of the freezer (gardening, fishing) so it seems fair.
ReplyDeleteYep. It seems only fair that if your husband is going to fill it, he should be the one to defrost it. :)
DeleteMy freezer is on the list of things I need to get to. I freeze food scraps in mine over winter to compost in spring so right now I'm digging through the scraps just to find what's still in there to eat.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have some good labels or you might be defrosting some interesting things for dinner. :)
DeleteWe have an upright freezer. I didn't want a chest freeze because t think I was traumatized as a child with my mom putting me on the chest freezer 2-3 times a day to do my exercise. Oh and I'm so short, in order to get to the bottom I would probably have to stand a stool :). Question: What is the purpose of putting flour in the freezer? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I would have been traumatized from being put in a chest freezer to exercise as a child--especially since I am claustrophobic. Was that what your doctor's recommended?
DeleteFlour can have eggs for bugs (weevils?) in it that won't hatch in cold temperatures, thus the storing in the freezer. Sounds gross, but the eggs are not a problem. Ever have flying bugs in your pantry? That's a hatch of these eggs. Also, whole wheat type flours have some fat in their grain and they can grow rancid. Freezing prevents this.
Basically, I store flours in the freezer because I don't bake enough to use them up fast enough to prevent the above problems.
