Here are a few things I saw this week (and last) during a Second Look.
We recently had a full moon which was bright enough to wake me up at night. |
We don't see many bucks in the deer herds that come into our yard, but there was one this day. |
Downy woodpecker |
I've been seeing some bluebirds over the last couple of weeks. Some of them migrate south and some stay for the winter which I guess these are doing. |
This pair of bluebirds have been going in and out of the birdhouse almost like it is spring and they're building a nest. However, they are probably just establishing a roosting place for the winter. |
House finch and goldfinch. They are blending pretty well into their background. |
The leaves are pretty much down from the trees now except for the oaks which won't lose all of this years leaves until the new spring growth pushes them off. |
I love your photos of the deer. That would be a lot of entertainment for me, just watching deer. What do your cats think of them? Do they notice the deer at all?
ReplyDeleteThe cats watch the deer, but they get excited about the squirrels and birds.
DeleteDo you have to wear hunter orange to stroll on your property? Enjoy your late fall days!
ReplyDeleteThere is some pasture between us and the woods, so no orange is needed. And behind the pasture is parkland and there's no hunting on it. However, that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.
DeleteBeautiful photos. I understand the no hunting and occasional non compliance with the hunting rules and regs. We were at the lake last winter and heard an explosion right outside our window. We ran outside and could smell gunpowder, then found the shells about 20 feet from our front door. There is no allowable night hunting in Alabama, but someone obviously did not expect us to be at the lake on a weeknight and didn't realize we were not only there but awake. I mean what are laws for when there are 5 deer in the front yard on a regular basis?
ReplyDeleteAlthough this didn't happen at your house, hunting at night often involves "spotlighting" where they take a spotlight into the woods to see the deer. There's a reason that there are laws against hunting at night--it's just too dangerous. I'm not against hunting. My father was an avid hunter, and that was much of our meat for the year. I'm just against illegal hunting.
DeleteBeautiful pics of country living. Thanks for sharing your part of the world with us!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! It's actually more like suburban-country living, but I am very happy to be in the place I am.
DeleteMy birdfeeder hasn't seen much activity lately, so it's nice to see your birds still around.
ReplyDeleteThat was a lovely moon. We were out driving when we first spotted that moon. I was sitting in the car next to my grandson who is a year old and I wanted to introduce him to looking at things outdoors so I asked him where the ball was. He lit up and pointed to it, then kept trying to reach it. It was huge wasn't it?
Oh, my goodness. That's a perfect scene that you described. The moon was huge, bigger than I remember recently.
