I am thankful for new experiences.
Friday night Ward and I went to a blues and jazz club to celebrate a friend's birthday. The club was in an upscale neighborhood and full of people who live lives a lot more exciting than mine. Or so I imagined. (I'm rarely up this late.) Three hundred people were seated around intimate tables eating fancy food. Or so I imagined. (I only had dessert--apple pie.) The room was dimly lit as we waited for the music and people drank exotic cocktails. Or so I imagined. (I only had water.)
Some how, I have made it this far in my life without ever going to a nightclub. And I probably won't go back anytime soon. As you might have guessed by my descriptions above, nightclubs really aren't my style. However during my first visit, I was having fun imagining that I was in one like I've seen on screen before--such as Rick's in Casa Blanca or the Tropicana with Ricky Ricardo singing Babalu. And for this experience, I am thankful.
(Yes, I know, this all sounds a little goofy, but sometimes, Goofy, is my middle name. :) )
I'm not a big nightclubber, either, surprise, surprise. I think we all have different ideas of "exciting lives"--I think your recent trip is way more exciting than being at a nightclub, although that "sounds" exciting.
ReplyDeleteI think the nightclub and the trip to the Southwest were both exciting. It's just that I enjoyed the scenery and hiking more. A lot more. Although the main reason we went to the night club was to see a band. The music was quite good.
DeleteNightclubs sound exotic, right out of old movie scripts, as I would imagine the people who frequent them would be exotic too. World wise and travelers with money who know their mixed drinks and want them just so and wear expensive clothing and jewelry. As you might imagine, I've never been to a club either, not any kind of club. Glad you had a good time.
ReplyDeleteThe nightclub was probably full of everyday people, but since I didn't know many of them, I gave them all exotic lives in my imagination.
DeleteWell I feel like the odd one out here. I am about as boring and ordinary as one person can be but we do go to small clubs with jazz on a fairly regular basis. Let me be the first to tell you exactly how exotic they are not. The dress is decent but not ritzy by any stretch. Slacks, blouses, an occasional dress, with jewelry one would wear normally during the day. (In my case wedding rings, a bangle bracelet and hoop earrings.) The food at such venues is rarely exotic and even more rarely delicious. Even the very well known clubs like Birdland and The Blue Note in NYC have exotic foods like catfish, collard greens, and chicken wings and steak salad on their menus. Those type of clubs are just music venues with food and drinks. (True, my drink is more exotic than water, well the first one is. After that I drink coffee.) Generally the total cost is the music cover charge and food, which costs about the same as any other restaurant.
ReplyDeleteI really do hate to burst your bubble!
It's fun to imagine that I was in one of the ritzy ones and part of that came from that we were in an expensive, place-to-be neighborhood.
DeleteAnne, you need to do more than post about food. You have this whole other interesting life that you are hiding from us. :)
Maybe I should start posting one alternate post a week and come out from hiding?
DeleteAs an aside: When Son3 was about 8 we had to go cut my Mother-in-laws lawn at her home in a small city about 50 miles away. He was much too young to leave at home by himself and unfortunately his group of friends had planned a day of fun he was going to have to miss. We went to Tuscaloosa and TheHub did the yard work while I ran errands for my MIL. Son3 rode with me and my car stereo was playing the entire time. On the way back I told him how sorry I was he had to miss the day with his friends and his answer was "That's OK Mom, they only played. I got to listen to French Jazz" I guess I am partly to blame for his music major?
That's pretty amazing. It sounds like one way or another he was destined to become a music major. It's interesting to look back at our kids as they were growing up and see how some of their childhood ways develop.
