This week had beautiful fall weather with cool mornings and warm, sunny afternoons. Even the day of rain was pleasant--maybe because it was much needed. The weather is signaling that fall officially began last night at sundown, but the changes are still subtle. No big change in the color of the leaves and no frost yet to turn some of the summer greens to brown. So, there was not much different to take pictures of this week when I did my Second Look. However, there were a few things that caught my eye.
Here are some things I saw this week
during a Second Look.

Sternbergia latea. These bloom every September but I always forget about them until I see their bright yellow colors pop up among the dead lilies and overgrown irises. A pleasant surprise to say the least. |
|
Something is starting to get ready for winter. See the hidden walnut in the fence post? |
|
Resting moth/butterfly on marigold at the end of the day. This insect was not moving and it was either a moth waiting for dark to be active or a butterfly resting at the end of an active day. |
|
The moon was out early this night. |
My daughter would love your sternbergia latea--she's a big fan of the color yellow. So pretty!
ReplyDeleteI love the cool nights and moderate days. Gotta enjoy the weather while we have it!!!
I like the sternbergia, also. Such a bright color and it looks like a big crocus--one of my favorites. Your daughter has good taste.
DeleteBeautiful pictures again! I actually thought of you yesterday when I was going to the mailbox. I have a half barrel filled with soil and have lantana planted in it. There were about 4 butterflies flitting around the blooms. I knew if you were here it would have been photographed (beautifully) and posted. Instead I just stood there watching for a while, got the mail and came back in the house. Oh well
ReplyDeleteOh, enjoying the moment was the perfect thing to do--capturing it on film would be neat, but seeing beauty around you is more important. :)
DeleteI agree. I try to leave my camera at home sometimes, so I won't be tempted to stop for pictures (although not a bad strategy when I'm on a strenuous hike.) Someday when I get a smart phone with a good camera, I'll have to work a bit more to just enjoy the moment.
DeleteI miss lantana. We had it when we lived in Houston. You can have it as an annual here, but it's not nearly as vigorous. It is a favorite of butterflies so I think I'll plant some next summer.
DeleteBeautiful photos. Walnuts are nearly ready here too. I try to find unattended trees, to harvest. I love walnuts. Fall is hitting here too, but nice days lately. I love watching the moon through my window at night.
ReplyDeleteI don't like black walnuts, so you'd very welcome to pick up all you could in my yard. In the meantime, the squirrels enjoy them. The interesting thing is that I grew up where they have a big Black Walnut Festival every year.
DeleteYou are so observant, I don't know that I would have thought to look so closely at the fence post but I'm glad you did. I know I will find myself looking closer at fencing around me now. :-) Love your fall blooms. I will have to keep those in mind because the yellow is so beautiful to see in autumn.
ReplyDeleteWard was walking with me and he's the one who saw the walnut first. You just never know what those squirrels are up to.
