I am thankful for timers.
I use the timer on my microwave the most. |
I use timers for many things, but the best thing they do for me is to get me started doing something I don't want to do. I set a timer for two minutes, five minutes, 30 minutes, etc., and then work on a chore for that amount of time. Before I start, I tell myself that I can stop when the timer goes off. Often, I have completed the task in the amount of time I set, or I have gotten over my inertia and continue working.
I might have a cat sitting on my lap all day long if I didn't have a timer to get me started with things. :)
Ooooo... that's a great strategy. I do something similar with songs. When there's something I really don't want to do I'll put on one of my favorite albums and tell myself that I have to work on it just until the album is over, or until xyz songs are done. Generally, once I get past the inertia phase I get into the task and it becomes significantly less onerous.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll use some songs also, if it's a task I can do while singing. There are a lot of songs I like to sing and what a perfect time to do it.
DeleteI really hate washing dishes, so I bring my laptop into the kitchen and watch TV shows while I wash them. That way I get to do something fun at the same time. I like the idea of singing too - I might have to implement that!
ReplyDeleteIf I brought a laptop or something similar into the kitchen while doing the dishes or cooking, I'd probably get it wet. I'm kind of clumsy sometimes. But I like the idea a lot. I love my vintage TV.
DeleteI started using a timer too, after reading about the pomodoro time management strategy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique. I'm a great procrastinator and like you, find the timer helps when I've been procrastinating on something too long!
