A Second Look--May 1, 2013

Here are a few of the things I found this week during a Second Look.

Dogwood

All of our dogwoods are white except this one.

Most of the daffodils have faded, but these white ones are still blooming.

The azaleas started to bloom this week.

This deer was munching on some day lilies.

It was raining while I did most of my walk this week as you can see by the raindrops on this violet.

It's hard to get a picture, but we have bluebird eggs in one of our boxes.

  1. I really like the nest - did you put up the boxes for the birds to nest in? You live in a really nice part of the world :)

    1. We did put the boxes up specifically for bluebirds. For Wally's Eagle Scout project, he built and installed bluebird boxes and bat boxes for natural insect control for a boy's home that was starting an organic garden. These boxes are leftover from that.

Although I get overwhelmed with the amount of work our yard takes to keep it from going totally wild and covered with poison ivy, I do like it. Last night I was watching young kits play in my neighbors yard.

  2. For some reason, I always thought bluebird eggs were magical when I was little. I think the delicate blue color has something to do with it. :-)

    1. I don't think we had any bluebirds around when I was little. However, any bird's egg was magical. Even just a little fragment which is what I usually found.

  3. i LOVE this series! You take phenomenal pics!! We have several Robin's nests under our deck, but we can't take pics, they are in awkward places.

We used to have Dogwoods in PA. I LOVE those trees. I may have to think about getting some for my back yard!

    1. I'm glad you enjoy the series. I really enjoy doing it. Not only do I learn things, for a little while I'm not thinking about all of the work that needs to be done. I'm just appreciating what is around me.

I grew up in WV and dogwoods littered the hillsides there. They were a "wild" tree and weren't found in people's yards. I think most of the trees in our yard are "wild" also. They are volunteers planted by birds or some such other creature. I love dogwoods also. They are my favorite among all of the spring flowering trees.

  4. Those bluebird eggs are so beautiful! That will be exciting to watch as the baby birds hatch and mature!

    1. I wish I could open the top of the box, so that I could get better pictures. The mama has been faithfully sitting on the eggs so hopefully there will be good results.

    1. Seems like a lot of birds' eggs are some shade of blue. However, I know these are bluebird eggs because a saw a bluebird fly out of the box. They are a pretty shade of blue, aren't they?
