A Second Look--February 27, 2013

Right now it's 36° F, with a strong wind driving rain into the windows. I'm glad that I did my exploring earlier in the week because I really don't want to go outside right now. As I did my Second Look, I found that I am focusing more on animals than plants, which I guess is no surprise since most of the plants are still dormant. However, I did find another clump of snowdrops I didn't know about. A pleasant surprise.

Also, I found more bones this week. Ward and I visited a local park last weekend and talked to the naturalist about some of the bones we've been finding. She gave us some good information to help narrow down what animals we may be dealing with. I found it all very interesting and will share some of her wisdom with you in another post.

Here's What I Found This Week During a Second Look.

Carolina wren

Acorn caps

Deer hoof prints

Snowdrops

Leaves we didn't get raked last fall.

Red-bellied woodpecker

Mammal jaw bone

Crow vertebrae

Park where Ward and I met with the naturalist.

  1. I was thinking about you and your Second Look posts today when I saw a green tree frog in the yard. My new place seems to have quite a bit of wildlife around - I've seen lots of lizards and and some birds as well.

I'm glad you learnt more about the bones and look forward to you sharing :)

    1. We don't have tree frogs around here, but the pictures I have seen of them suggest that they can be quite colorful. Have fun observing your new surroundings and its critters.

  2. I ventured out earlier yesterday then the high winds and rain came, I've been indoors all day today avoiding the weather. We still have too much snow to do much exploring so I really look forward to these posts.

    1. It seems like we have snow every couple of days, but this year we've never had more that an inch or so at any one time. And it melts the next day. Not the usual pattern, but it does allow me out to explore.

  3. Beautiful photos, again.
I really need to plant snow drops next fall! Do snow drops come up before crocus in your area?

    1. Snowdrops bloom about a month before the crocus. The ones we have are in an area that is overgrown, so I didn't even know they were there for several years. Now, I have to remember to make a special point to look for them. It is like finding a treasure when I see them because nothing else is close to blooming.
