Food Waste Friday and True Food Confessions--Jan. 18, 2013

It's time for Food Waste Friday, when the Frugalgirl encourages us to post pictures from the previous week of wasted food from our household. This accountability hopefully will help us to be more careful with our food and maybe save some money. Also, I am using this public forum to encourage us to eat out less which includes better meal planning. You can follow how we are doing in this endeavor by reading True Food Confessions.

 This Week's Food Waste

I was disappointed when I pulled out this piece of cheese and found mold on it. It was going to grace my tuna sandwich. Oh, well. I did manage to eat the last slice from another package before it went bad, though.
Otherwise, I think we're okay in the waste department.

This Week's True Food Confessions

We did pretty well this week considering we're still trying to gain our footing after several weeks of holidays followed by illness and traveling. In fact, mentally, it still feels like we're in quicksand. Given that, I'm kind of proud that we managed to do some cooking this week. We had easy, but delicious tuna sandwiches one night and another night we had cabbage soup using ingredients from the fridge. We also had a vegetable quiche using the unlikely combination of spinach and peas. However, it turned out pretty good. The different part of this dish was that I made a healthy, homemade pie crust. This was mostly because we haven't made it to the grocery store since we got back and I didn't have a chance to buy the oh so tasty, but bad for you crust.

Now, it may seem interesting that we haven't made it to the grocery store, but Ward did make it to his favorite Chinese restaurant for pick-up and Theo ordered burritos from Chipotle. I have to admit that I enjoyed their take out just as much as they did.

I'm hoping once again for a calm week next week and homemade, routine food.

  1. That quiche looks yum, they always taste so much better with homemade pastry, but I can never be bothered making it.

One slice of cheese is pretty good for food waste, unfortunately my week wasn't as good :(, despite your positive prediction that I would have zero waste this week. Oh well, there's always next time.

    1. The quiche was yummy. I wasn't sure how the sweetness of the peas would work, but they were just fine.

We usually do pretty well with cheese, but this package got hidden under some other things.

  2. I really like cabbage in soup and always forget about that! Need to remember that tidbit. One piece of cheese is pretty good, I'd say. I was happy to rescue 20 lbs of potatoes I stupidly let freeze. Have a good week!

    1. I'm going to have to go see how you saved you potatoes. Frozen veggies don't always make it.

The cabbage in the soup was good. I combined with some tomatoes that we had frozen this summer that still had a "fresh" taste to them. However, while use-up-what's-in-the-fridge soups are always okay, this one turned out well.

  3. That looks like not a bad week for the home cooking, and low food waste too. Good on you for getting back on the wagon so quickly after a rocky time. Hope your Mum is much better.

    1. My mom is slowly getting better, but now the hard work of physical therapy is setting in. I'm going to tell her the blog world, even from other continents, is sending her get well wishes. She'll like that.

  4. The quiche looks good! I sympathize with how hard it is to get back into the routine of going to the grocery store and coking if your schedule has been "off" for a few weeks. I am much in the same boat right now.

    1. And I really like routine, so I do much better when I have one. Good luck. I hope things are better for you soon.

  5. Oh, I hate when that happens to sliced cheese. With a hunk of cheese at least you can trim it off, but with a slice, I'm afraid the trimming would leave it looking like Swiss cheese! Hope your mom continues to improve.

    1. Interesting thought, making Swiss cheese out of slice of cheddar cheese. Some how I think the food safety experts wouldn't encourage that, but an interesting thought all the same.

  6. Wow, that's pretty good especially coming off of sickies and a messed up routine! We had the same thing happen and it took me some time to get back in the swing of things.

    1. I am hoping today, I can actually make a food plan for the week. However, my head is swirling with some other issues. We'll see how I do.
