A Second Look--August 20, 2014

Here are a few things I saw this week
during a Second Look.

Ward especially liked the Fibonocci spirals in the middle of this sunflower.

This wheel bug was about an inch long.

We had a good rain and a whole new group of mushrooms sprung up.

Along with the mushrooms, this bright orange fungus grew this week.

The dark coloration around this squirrels mouth and arm is different from any I've noticed before. I don't know if this is normal or the squirrel got stained trying to remove the hull from a black walnut. :) I'm going to start paying attention to see if I notice this pattern on any other squirrel.

The goldfinch are at their absolute brightest now.

  1. It's starting to look end-of-summer now, isn't it? Didn't we just exclaim over the beautiful spring flowers? :) Seems like this summer went even faster than usual.

    1. It is looking like the end of summer too soon. There are a few leaves turning in the tops of the trees here. Have leaves changed where you?

    2. Mostly not, although last week, while we were camping, my daughter was collecting a few red and yellow leaves that had fallen to the ground. They were beautiful, but ... I'm just not mentally ready to even contemplate autumn. Maybe when the kids start school in a couple of weeks ... but right now, I'm in denial.

  2. We've been saying exactly the same thing over here - the summer has definitely tipped over. We went for a walk today and saw fungi also which is a sure sign Autumn's on its way. I lOVE the sunflower. In the light of your happiness post, it just seems to encapsulate happiness wholly!

    1. Sunflowers do say happiness, don't they? It's hard not to smile when you see one.

  3. This is a swift kick in my backside to go out in the yard and focus on some of the simple beautiful things there. Thank you for the reminder.

    1. I do this so I don't focus on all of the things that need to be done. Sometimes I can have tunnel vision. Enjoy your yard.
