Thankful Sunday--February 28,2018

I am thankful for
new windows.

We knew when we moved into this house that it needed new windows. Especially the big bow window in the living room with its rotten wood and difficult windows to open and close. And as an extra aggravation, that window let in the intense afternoon sun from a southern exposure causing fading floors and a room too hot to be in sometimes.

But that all changed this week with the installation of new windows. We are looking forward to a cooler room (it was too hot sometimes even when there were freezing temperatures outside), minimal color fading, and no rotten wood. So for these beautiful new windows, I am thankful.

  1. Wow. I'm struggling to imagine a room that gets too hot in the winter time. Sorta makes me want to knock out a chunk of my south wall and install a big window! Anyhow, the new windows look beautiful, and I'm glad your home will be more comfortable.

    1. We get full direct afternoon sun on the back of the house, and it gets really hot. Fall is the hottest time when the angle of the sun is just so that we get its full effects, and we don't have frigid temperatures yet. In the summer it is still hot, but a little of the sun is blocked by the eaves over the window. However, the front side of house is cold, especially where the windows are covered by the front porch. We're hoping that the insulated windows will help with this too. Before living here, I would have never imagined that it would get too hot in the winter from just the sun through the window.

  2. Hooray for you! New windows were one of the best purchases we made for our home. I was surprised at how much sound they blocked (we live on a main road), as well. It's nice to do something for your house that makes it both look better and function better. Enjoy!

    1. We got new windows at our other house and the thing we noticed the most was the decrease in sound. An unexpected, but welcome effect. This house is pretty quite even though we're fairly close to a main road, but we expect it get even quieter.

    2. I understand how much you needed those windows. The difference is substantial. We got new windows in the back of our house because we also have a south facing window and we were smothering!

    3. I hope we have the same results as you did. When we first saw the nice windows in this house, little did we know what the problems would be.

  3. Your new windows look very nice and I am glad they will make the room more livable. The view that is visible from the windows look very nice, too.

    1. There is a very nice view out the windows, but there is a power line we see, also. I'm hoping with time, it will just fade into the background for me.

  4. Nice, well-insulated windows are a must in any home. I know this house needs all new windows but at this point we don't want to invest in it. Instead, we hope to get into another house within the not-so distant future. It's really hard finding precisely the right property but I know we'll find the purrfect place eventually. I'm sure in God's time, He will reveal it to us. Thanks for visiting over the weekend. :)

    1. Depending on the shape of your windows, you may want to invest in new windows anyway. They are one of the things that return good value on a sale and are a good selling point. It may be worth it to look into the details of your particular situation.

  5. Yay, you got your new windows! What brand did you end up going with? Did you get an independent installer or did you go with a big box store?

We used Home Depot and had a great experience with them. We replaced all of our windows because they were still the single-pane aluminum frame ones. We had to do it in 2 stages since it was so expensive (We replaced either 28 or 29 windows, I can't remember). But what a difference the new windows made! Not only is it cooler in the house (especially in the South-facing rooms) but, as you said, we hear much less noise from the outside. And it's just so nice to be able to open a brand new window that slides just right without rattling or thinking you're going to break the hardware! Admittedly, though, I've had to call them back a couple of times to re-explain to me how to open the windows without un-sitting them from the frame as they tilt inward so I can clean the outside of them while I'm still indoors since we have screens on all windows. Despite all their explanations, I'm still nervous whenever I wash them (which isn't all that often!).

Enjoy your new windows! I really like that window seat. I'll bet the cats do too :)

    1. We went with a local person who we used at our other house. We shopped around and he was the cheapest and did good work. We got Simenton windows which turn out to be made in the very small town I was born in. We usually have a basket in the window seat for the cats that they take turns using. However, right now, we need to paint the new wood so the basket is elsewhere.

  6. Wow---beautiful. I can imagine a pillow there and a cat sleeping.
