House update

We're still working fast and furious here trying to get to the point where we can live and own only one house. In fact, I've started this post several different times, only to be interrupted by some kind of house issue. This morning it was figuring out when the tile shop is open so we could do some shopping after work.
We took a drive around the neighborhood one day
 and found these roosting vultures.

Since we're looking for tile, you might have guessed that the contractor has begun work in the new house. The master bath has been gutted and is being rebuilt. Which means, lots of decisions to be made. I don't know how there can be so many choices for things and yet none of them seem to work for what we need/want. But nevertheless, we are finding things.

We have also decided to pull up all of the carpet that is there and replace it with hardwoods to match the family room and dining room where they already are. The carpet just didn't clean up like we had hoped. So we can't move in anything upstairs until all of that work is done.

However, we have done some moving into the basement. Meaning Theo has moved in. The basement has some finished space and some unfinished space that will make a great workshop for him, so we invited him to join us. He is out of his apartment and settling in. Sort of. The construction is causing enough dust and chaos, that he can't do much yet.

Back at this house we continue to purge things and pack a few. However, there is a long way to go before this house is ready to put on the market. We just don't seem to have any blocks of time where we can work on things here. And as the year moves on and we move into the time when the housing market it dead, I get more and more antsy.

So I'm still kind of going crazy and I feel like there is no rest for the weary. However, I know these are good problems to have and I am grateful that I'm dealing with them and not some other issues that have needed attention in the past.

  1. Sounds like a lot of tiring work but it's also exciting to be able to get your house remodeled the way you want it before you completely move in! Is your son going to be living with you guys full-time now, then? I thought the basement was going to be kitty heaven? lol.

Good luck with everything. Wooden floors sound better than carpet to me and if the floors get cold, you can just get throw rugs and wear slippers.

I hope your other house sells soon. Are you worried about carrying 2 mortgages at once, or is your first house paid off but you just want it to be over?

Good luck and hang in there! There is progress being made!

    1. Theo will be living with us permanently--temporarily, meaning until his business is established enough to float everything he needs for it and himself. We all hope that happens sooner rather than later, but start-ups can take a while.

The basement is big and the cats will have their own part of it at night. Part of the reason we want to separate them is to keep them out of the delicate work that Theo will be doing.

Also, we do have one house paid off, but with the work we're doing on the new one, cash flow is tighter than we like it to be.

  2. I feel for you, live and learn. I am wishing you peace and calm throughout this process. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you'll soon be done with it all.

I can't wait to see some photos! Have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks, Lili. I'm trying to calm myself down and doing better with it than before. And when I listen to the devastation that has happened from Hurricane Matthew, I feel silly to be worrying about some of these things. Like I said, these are good problems to have.

  3. Chaos!!!! This is why I STILL haven't been able to make myself tear up the hideous carpet, it's just the chaos factor, and once you start you're pretty much committed until it's done. But look at it this way, you're dealing with it all now so that once winter hits you'll be snug as bugs in your beautifully remodeled new home! :-)

    1. I feel the same way--we need to re-carpet the bedroom end of our house, but ohhhhh the disruption! L&L is doing it the way we should have done it (but we were short of cash at that point ... )--BEFORE she moves in!

How nice that Theo can join you! And that your new home isn't sitting empty!

    2. Redoing these floors is definitely expensive, but there's no better time than now. And we get a little discount if we do more of them. For cash flow purposes, it would be better to wait, but not for the chaos factor.

The house is also needs lots of cleaning. I don't think the elderly couple who lived there had been able to much cleaning for several years. So everything needs a scrubbing or two or three before I want to set anything on it. So yet another thing we want to get done before we move in. However, I think some of the painting will have to wait. Painting on our current house needs to be done first.

However, today will be caulking a leak around a big window at the new house before the next rain hits. But first we have to borrow a truck so we get our long ladder there to do it. I could go on and on, but I don't think the details of my To Do list are interesting to anyone but me and Ward.

  4. Sounds like so much work! I hope all goes well in the end, and you can relax once you have moved and your old house has sold, and enjoy your new lives.

    1. It is a lot of work, but isn't that what life is about? When I hear about the devastation that Hurricane Matthew is causing, I remember that I am so very blessed to actually have a good roof over my head and to be worrying only about a leaking window (we have a big window that has been leaking for years) and what size mirror to get in my bathroom.

  5. You are so smart for getting things done prior to moving in. I know it seems and feels chaotic, but one day before too terribly long you will look back and laugh! But right now I am really glad it is you who is going to be looking back and laughing and not me!

    1. Being the one always wanting more, I wish we had time to more things before we move in like a good cleaning and paint job all over the house. However, I don't think that is going to happen. The old house needs the paint job sooner, so we can get it on the market. But first to get rid of the wallpaper. Sometimes that stuff can be so stubborn.

You can laugh with me or at me anytime you want and I'll return the gesture. :)

  6. Wow! I need to catch up... How crazy it must feel to own two homes, but I'm sure with interest rates still low, you home should sell quickly. Great move with the hardwoods. I can't seem to bring myself to live with someone else's carpet. Just a thing for me, I guess. :)

    1. This carpet was particularly hard for me because it had a lot of black on it from wheel chair marks from the elderly man who used to live there. With my aging mother who recently became wheelchair bound, there was much too much emotion tied to those carpets for me to be comfortable with.

  7. You are wise to get the remodeling done before moving in. Hope you'll be able to it all done relatively quickly, though.

    1. There will be plenty more things to work on once we move in, but we're having done the things that it would be very difficult to do if we were there. We know because we did the same things in this house a few years ago and it was not fun.
