A Second Look--August 10, 2016

Here are a few things a saw this week
during a Second Look.

Zinnia

Marigolds. I have a lot of marigolds this year and they all came from last years seeds as volunteers.

More big mushrooms/fungus sprung up almost overnight. Notice the 12" ruler for scale.

I got several begonias at the end of the planting season for half price and they're doing very well. However, the geraniums I also got on clearance don't look so good. But I'm still holding out hope for them.

Hydrangea. You can see that it was sprinkling when I took this picture.

Most of the coneflowers are drying up and turning to seed. Here's one that is a little behind schedule.

This box is full of noisy baby wrens. However since it only opens in the front, I haven't looked in. Several years ago I did that and all of the babies fell out. I managed to put them all back with success, but I don't the open box any any more when there is nesting going on. Just before I snapped this picture, the mother bird was peeking out the hole. Timing everything and it wasn't good this time.

However, I did manage to get a picture of the mother when she flew out of the box. The babies were really loud until she called something to them and then all of the cheeping stopped at once. I guess I represented stranger-danger.

How many butterflies can you see in this picture?

  1. I think Blogger is playing with you today. I received an email of a new post but it was from June for father's day, when I stopped to see if you had a new post I found a second look, yay Did you know your mushroom photo isn't showing up? Thought you might like to know.

I can't get over how much color you have still. I'm planning a pollinator garden for along the drive and love the flowers that are covered with butterflies. What type of flowers are in there to attract so many at once?

    1. Blogger has been acting strange lately. Hopefully, things will get better. I logged into my blog from another computer and I see the mushroom picture. These are all my pictures taken from the same file, so I'm not sure what is going on.

I have simple zinnias and marigolds only in that planter. They are easy to start from seed and withstand heat pretty well. I think this will be one of my go-to combinations from now on. Also, I'm going to start playing attention to what Aunt Martha plants because she mainly plants for butterflies and birds. I love to go there and watch all of the activity that she has around her flowers.

  2. Hmm, I'm not having any problems with your blog but I follow you on Feedly not via email. If your email subscribers continue to have problems (such as not getting your posts), there could be a problem with the feed settings. I had such a problem recently and I posted about how I fixed it here: http://imperfectlyfrugally.blogspot.com/2016/06/have-your-email-followers-stopped.html

What a great feeling to look at your beautiful pictures of a garden after the rain on a hot and dry day here. I covet all your beautiful flowers. Love seeing all the butterflies!

    1. Thanks for the info on Feedly. I went to the site and didn't see any problems with the feed size in the log. But I'll give it another look if there are more problems.
