P is for Play

P is for Play
or I Went to See A Play

Last weekend, Ward and I went to the local theater and saw a play. When we made the reservations a couple of months ago, the weather was cold and snowy and spending an afternoon watching a play was appealing. However, on Saturday when there was beautiful spring weather, I was not so sure that I wanted to spend the afternoon inside.

But it was well worth it. We saw Dial M for Murder and thoroughly enjoyed it. Dial M was written by Frederick Knott and was first preformed in England before Alfred Hitchcock made it into a movie in 1954. We both had seen the movie, but had forgotten many of the details. So we were on the edge of our seats much of the time as the story unfolded . In fact, the over 2 hour play held my attention the entire time. A rare occurrence for that length of time.

If you haven't seen Dial M for Murder or haven't seen the movie in a long time, I recommend you watch it. It plays frequently on TV or pick it up at the library. I just put a hold on it at my library so my kids can see it.

We make it to a play a couple of times a year and find it is a nice break from our regular routine. And this time was no exception.

  1. Sounds like fun! I always enjoy seeing a play, especially one put on by a children's production :)

    1. We are lucky that there is a local theater fairly close to us that does very high quality productions. Prices are reasonable and there is parking. A hard combination to beat.

  2. Oh, fun! I haven't seen any plays in years except for the school musicals. In my single years, I lived in a small town which had an extension college campus. They were known for their theater program and had a summer theater series which included theater students as well as semi-professional actors. Like you noted above, the prices were reasonable and it was easy to park. One of my friends and I would get season tickets. I remember seeing a lot of fun productions but I don't think I've ever seen Dial M For Murder. Glad you had fun!

    1. Until we found this place, Ward especially didn't want to pay the prices to see a show. $100 seemed like a lot to sit in the far balcony, fight traffic and have difficulty parking. However, now he's all on board.

  3. I LOVE that movie! I didn't realize it was a play before Hitchcock got hold of it. Sounds like a wonderful afternoon.

  4. I don't know much that is better than live, be it music or theater. Good for you for going. We go to plays often and really enjoy them, but I have never seen M for Murder live.

    1. We usually go to musicals, so I wasn't sure how I would like this one, but I enjoyed it. Actually the mood music was quite good.

    1. I don't know if I would call it relaxing since it can be a little tense--at least for me anyway. But I would probably be enjoyable.

  7. I love going to plays! I haven't seen Dial M, either in play or movie, so I will check our library for that dvd right away. Thanks for the suggestion.

    1. You are getting to go to more performances now that your daughter is in college, aren't you? That's another place to get a good production at a reasonable price. Hope you find the movie.

    1. I can see why Hitchcock would want to make a film out of it. It has the perfect elements to do his kind of suspense. If you like Hitchcock, I would recommend to see it again some rainy afternoon.
