Thankful Sunday--January 24, 2016

I am thankful for a snow day.

As most of you know we had a big snow storm here yesterday.  We haven't done exact measurements, but it looks like we got about 2 1/2 feet at our house. Luckily, we kept electricity the whole time, so we had the perfect snow day. We were warm inside and had a good show outside to watch with the falling snow and visiting birds.

Also, the fact that we couldn't go out put us in a different frame of mind. We did some clean up that we never seemed to get to. We cleaned out three drawers, two baskets, and one cabinet. We found a couple of things we had forgotten about and found a couple of things we couldn't identify.

Today is dig out day. Right now the temperatures are in the teens and wind is still blowing. But the snow has stopped. And for the break the snow day brought to us yesterday, I am thankful.

    1. Snow is pretty, isn't it? That's a crow on the limb but it's hard to make out through the snow. They usually visit in large numbers, but I only saw two of them yesterday.

    2. It's a beautiful photo. I love it! I wonder where the birds hide out in these storms.

    3. I was also wondering about the deer. It was pretty deep for them. I know squirrels have nests high in the trees and birds protect themselves in bushes, trees, and in nesting boxes. At least ours are always used during the winter for shelter by the birds.

  2. I'm glad you got to have a fun snow day. And that a lot of the snow happened over the weekend, when many people are home from work and not trying to be on the roads. 2 1/2 feet is a LOT! I learned pretty quickly that when I shovel the driveway, I need to push the snow much farther out than the borders of the driveway, to allow for the snow mounds to grow. You should take a picture of someone standing by one of your snow mounds to give us an idea of how massive your snow amount is. :)

    1. I tried to get Ward to go out with me to get a picture by one of the piles, but he said he was done with snow for the day after doing a lot of shoveling. I think the one at the end of our driveway is about 6 feet tall.

  3. It is beautiful to watch from indoors. I'm glad you stayed warm and found things to occupy yourselves with. That is a whole lotta snow! Do you have to clear your roof when you get that much snow in one storm?

    1. We're not experienced in this much snow, but I don't think we have to clear our roofs as they are not flat. And wind blew some of the snow off. Also, I'm not sure if we're supposed to clear for ice jams. Later in the week, we will have warmer temperatures that will hopefully take care of all of these concerns. In the meantime, I will talk to my sister who lives in Maine for advice. She is well versed in snow measures.

  4. Wow that is just beautiful! We had snow for several hours but it was above freezing so there were no accumulations. I love a snow day as long as the power stays on! Sounds like y'all were lucky. We keep hearing about all the outages. Hope the big dig is not too painful!

    1. They are great. Getting off work for a snow day was almost as good as getting off school when I was a kid.

  6. I thought I had left a comment but guess I read your post and didn't make the time to leave a reply. I'm glad you enjoyed your snow day, we didn't get much here so it wasn't much of a snow day and for that I am thankful.

    1. Thanks for visiting, Lois. We've had warmer temperatures recently so much of the snow is melting. Although I still see dump trucks trucking it away from the roads to somewhere else. There was too much this time to just push to the side.
